This family-run Chinese restaurant serves authentic dishes using real ingredients like ginger, garlic, and green onions. If you’re a fan of spicy food, this place is a must-visit. Unlike typical American Chinese restaurants that are known for their high salt and sugar content, this restaurant offers a different experience. They’re happy to accommodate your preference for milder flavors if you can’t handle spicy food without compromising the flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here and will definitely be back when we’re in town again.

my boyfriend and i came here for the first time tonight to try something new and absolutely loved it !! i haven’t had any luck with Chinese food in Gainesville since moving here but will never try another place again!

i got their mapo tofu rice bowl with no pork and my bf got their orange chicken bento which comes with a spring roll, sesame ball and salad. the mapo tofu was AMAZING with lots of tingly sichuan peppercorn and spicy chili oil!! his orange chicken tasted like fresh orange and was super crispy and hot 🙂 we also got the egg drop soup which was light but flavorful!

they have plenty of vegetarian options with an entire page dedicated to vegetable dishes 🙂

the portions are generous and prices are so reasonable, we both had plenty of leftovers and only paid about $33 for our meals.

service wasn’t bad, they were pretty busy at dinner time on a sunday so i understand they had lots of tables 🙂 our waitress came by to refill our water which was cool!

sohao also just so happens to be located next to the best boba spot in Gainesville, so do yourself a favor and get sohao for dinner then tea bestea for dessert!

overall would highly recommend!! we will definitely be back!

I think I’ve come here at least once every two weeks for the last three years. The food is amazing. Even when I eat at Chinese restaurants in mainland China, the thought of “visiting Sohao” comes to mind… The food at Sohao is really that authentic. The staff there are also incredibly welcoming, kind, and nice to talk to. This is a must go-to restaurant to try out if you are in Gainesville.

If you are looking for the best Chinese food in town, specifically authentic Szechuan cuisine, Sohao Cafe is the place to go. The flavors here are incredibly complex and well-rounded, proving that Szechuan cooking is about so much more than just heat.
The menu has some serious highlights, particularly the cumin lamb bao, the General Tso’s tofu, and the Dan Dan or Bang Bang noodles. If you’re a fan of spice, the chili fish and chili chicken are both fantastic choices. One appetizer that people are definitely sleeping on, though, is the scallion pancake—it is a must-order.
Just a heads-up: this is not Panda Express. Don’t come expecting those typical heavy, sweet flavors. However, the staff is very nice and accommodating, so if you aren’t a fan of intense spice, they are happy to prepare milder versions of the dishes if you ask. It’s a great spot for anyone wanting a more elevated and authentic experience

Hands down the best Asian food in Gainesville! Everything is packed with flavor, fresh ingredients, and perfectly cooked. The pork belly dry wok is absolutely incredible — crispy, tender, and loaded with just the right amount of spice. You can tell every dish is made with care. The portions are generous, the staff is friendly, and the whole experience is always top-notch. I find myself craving it all the time — definitely a Gainesville gem!

This is hands down our favorite restaurant. We love everything we have had and we keep coming back and trying new things. The egg drop soup is a comfort food; we love the dry noodle, Sichuan beef, sweet and sour pork, cucumber in spicy garlic dressing, sesame chicken, scallion pancakes, etc. the menu has options for everyone and has become the place we always want to take others.

Beautiful interior, good service, decent food. The spicy chili wontons appetizer and spicy stir fried squids were delicious, recommended. The salt pepper soft shelf crabs were a bit salty. The roasted duck doesn’t seem fresh, a bit dry.

I’ve been forgetting to write a review. I came here about close to a year ago but I also have friends who are regulars. First off food is great and service is PERFECT. They welcome you like family. of course its not like “formal” dining but I like how casual it is and welcoming it is. Reading some of the invalid reviews I don’t get it. How can Sohao be given a 1 star just because rice portion is “small”, you admit food is good but complain about free rice with the dish?! I travel often to other countries and states, I would say in Flushing they charge rice about $3-4 a bowl for a place like Sohao. Another point I saw, food is “oily” well go to your basic booty Fresh Kitchen. Its Chinese food, have you seen them, they are SKINNY, while us Americans are BIG. I love the family style vibes and be open when coming to Sohao, you never know. I know they treated my friends like family. Sohao is human so treat them with some respect.
It’s one those places if you know you know.

I had Hunan Pork Belly, and it was delicious, prepared well, if a little one note. Portion size was excellent. Rice was a little on the dry side, but perfect to soak up some of the juices from my entree.

Service was prompt, friendly, and adequate. We did have to flag someone down to put our order in, but that was due to how busy they were.

Ambiance was excellent, though the constant chiming of the front door bell got old quick.

Overall, the food was worth the price. The selection on offer is expansive and covered everything I could want. I will likely visit again and would recommend this as worth checking out.

Don’t sleep on Sohao! One of the consistently best restaurants in GV in regard to food quality and service. The menu is quite large, there aren’t many descriptions, and some of the dishes are atypical for restaurants in the area, but the staff is very well trained and can answer your questions and offer suggestions. So thankful we found this gem! Recommendation – Szechuan eggplant /chef’s kiss/.
