This was my first time in Glencoe to watch a show at Writer’s Theater, and I stopped by this place for a meal before the show. It seems to be the only Chinese restaurant in the entire town and also one of the few places both open at night and relatively affordable.
My friend and I ordered the Walnut Shrimp Special and Sauteed Green Beans. We were told it would take 30 minutes, so we sat inside to wait, and the food came out right on time and piping hot. You can’t dine in the restaurant though, as they don’t have a dining license.
9 times out of 10, Chinese takeout will always hit for me, and Shanghai Garden was no exception. The green beans were flavorful and well-sauteed. The walnut shrimp had a nice crispy texture, tangy taste, and also came with broccoli and crispy noodle pieces.
The portions are large for the price and they also included a large box of rice with our order. For just $15 per person, we had a good amount of leftovers. Overall great value, tasty food, generous portions, friendly service— I would love to return if I’m in the area again!

Like walking into a cluttered old counter.Location had SO much potential but looked so tired and neglected. The one person taking orders also looked tired and old. Food was ok.

Take out food is pretty good, no complaints here. BUT you have to wait like 10 minutes for someone to come out of the kitchen to take your order even if there is no one else waiting. Not a deal breaker but sure is a pain.

I used to love Chin’s and was upset when it closed. I honestly think the food here is better. Its fresher, cleaner, less greasy than chins was. Very delicious! Loved every last bite! Fried rice is particularly excellent.

We have gotten takeout from Shanghai Garden multiple times. The food has been good each time and ready when they say it will be. At this point, we do not get Chinese take out from any other place.

The food here is mediocre. The service is not so great. They are always 30 minutes later than time promised. Glencoe needs better Chinese food!
