Great food and amazinSeriously, the food here is just incredible. Every single bite was packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. I’m already planning my next visit just to try more of their dishes. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. It’s truly some of the best food I’ve had in a long time.g staff.

Love love love the vibe of this restaurant!!! The gospel fried chicken is a must-have. I have a hard time ordering anything else when it’s on the menu. The service is always excellent, and they are so personable. I recommend you make this a go-to stop on your Virginia City adventures. 🙂

This cute little Mexican restaurant is open later than a lot of places in Virginia City. It has a fun, charming and cute atmosphere. The food was delicious and the service exceptional! I found the prices reasonable. (especially for Virginia City.) I will definitely go back.

The three of us had a wonderful lunch here after riding the train to Virginia City and walking around town. I bet they have never had a client order cheesecake and a bowl of beans for lunch! Our server attended us quickly and kept our drinks topped off. I enjoyed the open window so I could watch the passersby. I think this is a place locals frequent judging by the number of families inside.

We made reservations with Cafe Del Rio weeks in advance for a group of four on Halloween night in Virginia City. We arrived ten minutes early, and while there was a table open, the group that walked in ahead of us got seated. We waited 35 minutes, and were eventually seated. It was a busy night, but reservations should have been honored.
Next, we ordered cocktails. While pricey at $18, we got Margaritas with no salt on the rim. They came out with plenty salt on the rim. It got wiped away, and we continued on.
Dinners were ordered, two with no onion. Those two came out with plenty of onions. It was a preference and not an allergy, so we picked them out. The ‘Blue Pot’ was a rather pricey cup of rice, beans, meat, and onions. It came with two small street-taco tortillas. My friend and I asked for more, and because it was so busy, it took about ten minutes. We were nearly done by the time they came out, split in half, no less.
Ultimately, none of this ruined our night, but we had hoped for better than we received. The staff were all extremely busy with a full house, and did their best, but mistakes were made.
We wanted a five-star visit, but Cafe Del Rio only earned two. Our third time here in as many years will likely be our last, unfortunately.

UPDATE:
Since my last review (about a year ago) the portions have gotten better so I don’t mind the $21 menu price. My husband and I went for my birthday brunch and it was excellent! I got the gospel chicken (see photo)! YUM!!
OLD REVIEW:
The portions keep getting smaller and the prices keep getting larger. Honestly the prices don’t make ANY sense. The new owners clearly do not know how to cost out a menu. Menu engineering 101. Google it.

Cafe del Rio in Virginia City. Never had a bad experience here, and it has been a while, so a brief review. It’s Thursday, so the crowd here is all local, but there is still a pleasant buzz in the dining room. We got reservations just in case, and when we arrived, our table already had chips, salsa, and water waiting for us. Our server seated us, and took our order quickly after a brief chat. The atmosphere is pretty unique, as the restaurant is in an historic building in one of our more lively ghost towns, but my wife and kid both say it’s too cold every time we come so I’d recommend a nice sweater or jacket. The gospel fried chicken is just a blast to get every time. My wife had enchiladas, and she was thrilled with the fresh mole sauce. My son had enchiladas from the kids menu, which is nothing to write home about I’m sure, but he is a happy camper, it was warm and melty. It’s easy to tell everything is homemade, and with love. The chef came out to greet us and check on things, and everyone was just pleasant as can be. It felt like a fancy family holiday dinner with no drama.

Affordable yet delicious. Had the the filled, fantastic. Quick service. Town was at least an hour wait just to get some crappy pizza but this place was only like a 5 minute walk and it was nice and quiet even though it was busy. Will go back for sure.

A bit of a walk from the main strip but well worth the venture. The place was shockingly unoccupied considering how busy the town was. High noon and a low population really made for a nice change form the streets.
The Cesar Salad was good and while the complimentary salsa was a little watery for my pallet it was included in the meal at no extra cost. The Mahi on the salad was delicious and it took me off guard. I was expecting middling and got amazing.
The waitress was knowledgeable about the area and the options at the restaurant equally. Was able to advise on food allergies and fun things in town without missing a beat.
Speaking of beat county music is the fair here with an inconsistent volume based on how much someone in the back wanted to sing to it.
If you are COVID-19 conscious this place does not require masks of customers or workers. If it had been busier it would have caused me to find other options. As it was it was reasonable.
