Intimate Japanese eatery specializing in sushi bowls, plus beer, wine, and sake.

Came with a friend just after they opened at 11:30am on a weekday for a quick lunch. The smiling woman greeted us kindly and we did to-go orders. We ordered the 3 amigos donburi bowl for $24 and the Uni bowl with tuna & fluke for $35. We took a to-go order and it was ready in about 5 minutes. The place is most definitely family run, I think it’s the owners husband and wife and son. The place has a vintage feel from the wood and the accessories, definitely well loved by local the local Japanese. When we opened our to-go packages we noticed the 3 Amigos bowl was stacked with fish but the uni bowl was a bit sparse. The salmon was my favorite cut of fish, super fatty and fresh. Well, we figured out what was missing, the uni! Haha. When we finished our meal, we walked back and they already had a table of Japanese businessmen. We showed them the photo of our obligatory shot before we ate and they apologized and gave us the small box of uni that was missing. Would recommend for the salmon and spicy salmon portion, tuna was pretty standard. Rice was nicely seasoned and fresh. Decent price and portion for the city.

Visiting NYC, wanted to have some sushi, I stumbled on this restaurant on Google Maps, decide to try it because the reviews rated it 4.5. I had shrimp avocado and spicy tuna roll, and the beef tataki. The sushi was meh, I had better before. But I did enjoy the beef tataki, I would order that again. The service was a little less than average.

Kaoru Sushi is one of those hidden gems that you’re grateful to discover and even happier to return to. It’s a cozy, inviting spot that immediately makes you feel comfortable the moment you step inside. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, making it the kind of place you can visit not just for special occasions but as an everyday go-to for great sushi and Japanese comfort food.
The food is excellent. I tried both a roll and a donburi, and both were absolutely delicious. The sushi roll was fresh, perfectly prepared, and balanced in flavor — you can really taste the quality of the fish and the care that goes into each bite. The donburi was equally satisfying, hearty yet delicate, with flavors that felt authentic and thoughtfully put together. It’s the kind of food that keeps you coming back, not just because it’s good, but because it feels consistent and reliable.
What also stood out was the atmosphere. It’s small enough to feel personal but with enough seating that you don’t feel cramped. Service was warm and friendly, adding to the overall charm of the place.
In short, Kaoru Sushi is a true hidden gem — cozy, authentic, and consistently excellent. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood.

This is probably the most authentic Japanese place I’ve been to for sashimi. So fresh. Rolls are fresh as well. Their eel is amazing, absolutely the best I’ve ever had. However, it is $30 a bowl, so it’s quite expensive, but it is worth it. I recommended it. Three amigos is a great dish. I think people should give it a try.

Updated review (7/11): What the….how did they up their came on presentation in a week?! Take a look at the second 3 amigos bowl pic posted -nice!
Original review (7/2):What a great find! Had lunch with some colleagues here and while it’s not cheap, it’s reasonably priced for what you’re getting. I got the 3 amigos bowl (regular, $24) which was a good variety of sushi, and came with a bowl of miso soup. We were seated at the counter and the counter staff was friendly, and let us have our conversations without interruption. Would definitely come back again.

The sashimi is really fresh here! Nice, classy-but-chill ambiance as well–it’s a Japanese Piano Bar, which means that at night there’s live piano music that sometimes people do karaoke to. I didn’t drink any alcohol, but I really liked their Yuzu Soda. Food was high quality–don’t expect your usual “bar food”. Summary below:
-Edamame was tender and the portion generous. –a good snack.
-Sashimi–tried it for the first time and was VERY impressed. Very fresh (no smell at all!) and the manager was kind enough to recommend the best raw fish for a first-timer (amberjack).
-Cold Udon noodles were bouncy and savory and there was a fun texture from the little fried bits on top. Has a dashi broth, so if you don’t like any seafood taste, I’d skip.
-Tonkatsu was Japanese-style thick and juicy and nice–a fresh and clean fry.
-Dumplings in Chili Oil were sooooo yummy and the chili oil was spicy, but the good kind of spicy that makes you want to eat more.
-Miso Pork Rice Bowl was kind of like a fried pork dipped in this miso-forward sauce–amazing and warm and comforting. They don’t skimp on the green onion topping.
Other notes:
-Bathrooms were clean
-There’s a karaoke room (I didn’t use it, just saw it)
-Love that the bar stools are regular-chair height.
-Most staff seemed to speak both English and Japanese.
-Some food looked like it was only served in the evening.
Overall, I can’t recommend this place enough. It feels like a hidden gem, tucked away across the street from the UN. I really enjoyed my visits!

Fresh food. Both three amigos and kanpachi chrashis were tasty! There is no ton-katsu though (old reviews mention it), so my daughter had to get beef soboro bowl instead. She still loved it and recommended it with two thumbs up!

Sure, the food is good for the price, but the Japanese waitress who served me during the slowest hours (around 3 PM) had such a bad attitude when I asked a few very basic questions about the special. Maybe she was having a bad day, but that has nothing to do with a paying customer, especially one who tipped generously to support the business anyway. It felt super unprofessional and disappointing, particularly because I’ve been coming here for more than a decade. The guys are usually nice and courteous, so this experience really stood out in a negative way.

We enjoyed the food; most of the dishes were delicious and well-prepared. However, the service was disappointing—there was a lack of attentiveness and professionalism. The staff showed no enthusiasm or smiles, which made the experience less enjoyable.

Had a wonderful Japanese dinner at Kaoru on East 46th off 2nd in Kips Bay.
An off-the-beaten-path, low key spot, they offered a very traditional array of sushi & sashimi.
We started with an order of edamame and kinpira (a salad of burdock, lotus roots, a carrots in soy sauce with sesame seeds) and moved on to some simple but delicious rolls.
