Tavern on George — An Absolute Standout
Tavern on George absolutely nailed it tonight. From the moment we sat down, the atmosphere felt warm, lively, and effortlessly inviting—the kind of place where you instantly relax and know you’re in good hands.
The food was outstanding. Every bite felt intentional, comforting, and indulgent in the best way. This is elevated tavern food done right—rich flavors, generous portions, and clearly made with care.
But the real star of the night was our waiter, Gabriel. Hands down, one of the best servers I’ve ever had anywhere. Attentive without hovering, friendly without being forced, and genuinely invested in making sure the experience was perfect. He read the table flawlessly, anticipated needs before we even asked, and brought an energy that made the whole night better. Service like that is rare—and unforgettable.
If you’re in New Brunswick and want great food, a great vibe, and world-class service, Tavern on George is the move. Ask for Gabriel. You’ll leave happy, full, and already planning your return.

I had a really enjoyable evening at Tavern on George. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, especially with the live music playing from 7 PM to 10 PM it definitely added a great vibe to the night.
Our server, Auriel, was outstanding. Super attentive and friendly, he recommended a few dishes for us, which made the whole experience even better.
I ordered a burger it could’ve used a bit more seasoning, but it was still good. The fries were crispy and well done. My wife went with the pork ribs, and they were excellent fall off the bone tender and full of flavor. We also tried the calamari; it wasn’t the best I’ve had, but it was still decent.
My Amaretto Sour was spot on smooth, balanced, and delicious.

First, I would like to thank the staff for all of their help in coordinating and a huge thank you to Gabriel for his patience and hospitality running the our whole bar and party solo. I had the opportunity to host a private party in the cellar of Tavern. We all enjoyed the food, drinks and room very much. I highly recommend this place if you are considering having a bite, quick drink or hosting an event!
I am very satisfied with the event overall, I would like to give a couple minor constructive criticisms for feedback.
On a few occasions random people who I did not know would find their way down into the “private” room which turned out okay but some people may have a problem with this.
Also I was told that we’d have the room until midnight when the bar closed. To be clear we did not feel rushed to leave, I wish there was a bit more clarity on the deadlines for the kitchen and bar ahead of time. I say this mostly because we had a good portion of the group show up late so we decided to continue the rest of the night elsewhere afterwords.
Overall, I had been here many a times as a fellow Rutgers graduate and I will be back soon! Thank you as always!

Came here after a sporting event at Rutgers and couldn’t have had a better experience. The sporting event ended later in the evening and when we were trying to find a place in town for dinner afterwards, most places had closed their kitchens but luckily Tavern on George was still open! It was a great space, they were able to accommodate a large group and the live music was awesome. The food was also excellent (get the burger) and they had a great selection of beer. All the servers were great too and the bartenders let us stay while they were closing while we waited for our train home. Will be

Honestly, I’ve been wanting to try this place. I finally tried it and honestly, it was so disappointed. If you do like really strong drinks, I guess that’s great for you then this place. The vibes I don’t know. I just didn’t like it. It was very odd. Make sure of ages. Food wasn’t that good honestly, didn’t smell very good. In the place. Everything looked very old I was super excited to try the fried calamari and the pretzel. It was disgusting. Sorry

Had a burger here during a quiet lunch time. The burger was made well. The fries and onion rings were fantastic. Nuff said, cold beer, and great food. Highly recommend.

Ordered the loaded tots, the huge pretzel, and the cheese steak rolls. All good. Incredibly filling, no need to order entrees.
The main room had TV’s playing sports and a stage with acoustic singer. If it had been anything more that one guy with a guitar, it would have been too loud.
Good spot for a date. Will go again.

I would definitely recommend this Tavern if you are in the area. Right on George Street, there is no car traffic in this area of George St. We only stopped in for drinks, but the food looked amazing. I will definitely be back for the food. Drinks were made perfectly, and the atmosphere was amazing. Love that they have a downstairs area as well. Look forward to going back.

This was my first time coming here and it was pretty good. I’d give the food a 3.5-4 star rating. My main dish was pretty good but my appetizer was extremely good! I recommend the Mac n cheese bites. I forgot to get a photo. We ate them all before it crossed my mind.

Three of us stopped in after a Christmas show. Long time since I was there last–think but not sure there were booths in the dining area, removed for tables which made the area more open. The food was pretty good, especially the crispy crusted fish and chips (and they have malt vinegar), but not a soup thickened with too much flour. Service was good. There were a few guys at the bar a bit noisy for college football, but it is a bar! It’s kinda like it’s either your vibe or it’s not. Good place, liked it.
