Grateful to Otoro for being open late, since there are so few options outside of fast food. Head Chef Jason was a pleasure to talk to, and check out his beautiful paintings which are on the walls! The 10-piece sashimi was excellent (hanami was my favorite) and he recommended the deep fried cheese cake which was very good! Highly recommend!

Delicious sushi and ramen. The Karaange is also very tasty and somehow still crunchy when delivered. I get that there are some negative service reviews but at its core it’s very good sushi. I’d say relax and go, everything doesn’t need to be insanely fast. It’s clearly a small business and not a conglomerate with a staff of 50.

The Sacramento health department found O-Toro Sushi & Shabu to be in violation of several food safety codes. During an inspection on February 20, the restaurant was recommended to shut down.

When: February 20, 2026
Where: 2131 J St, Sacramento, CA 95816
O-Toro Sushi & Shabu serves sushi and ramen bowls. According to the report, the facility was reported for several violations. They include:

Tempura batter was observed on a prep table next to the fryers at 60°F. As a corrective action, ice was added at the time of inspection, and the issue was corrected.
Major evidence of rodent infestation was observed throughout the facility. One dead mouse was found in a trap underneath shelving in the rice dry storage room. Three rodent droppings were observed on shelves in the sushi bar storage room, and 25 droppings were next to the end of the sushi bar.
About 130 droppings with urine marks were observed on the floor underneath the sushi bar.
Droppings were observed on food and food packaging, including one rodent dropping on a bag of sugar, two droppings on canned oyster-flavored sauce, one dropping on a bag of to-go containers in the basement storage room, one dropping inside plastic bags in the office, and 50 droppings throughout the office floor.
The report said there were 30 droppings on top of the dish machine, 20 droppings on the floor underneath the dish machine, and 25 droppings on the floor underneath the metro racks in the room with the ice machine.
The floor underneath cooking equipment at the cook’s line had 50 droppings, the top of soy sauce boxes in the rice dry storage room had 10 droppings, the water heater had five droppings, the floor underneath a metro rack in the hallway had 20 droppings, the lid of a soy sauce container in the hallway had one dropping, and the floor underneath sink equipment in the bar area had 15 droppings.

Dragon roll is not bad.
Shrimp tempura roll was not good at all and very small. Lion king roll was okay, nothing special…however the size was reasonable.
Volcano roll was okay, wouldn’t recommend it.

Kids got chicken yaki noodles, they enjoyed that.

Overall 2/5. Not coming back. The prices are high and food did not taste as I expected.

Great and speedy service. The hand rolls were amazing. We ordered the scorpion, the broadway roll and the burnt roll. They were all delicious, but we particularly loved the scorpion because it had a kick to it. They close at 11:30pm which is perfect since I work in the industry and there’s nothing else open in the area late night. Definitely coming back.

I was really disappointed with my experience at Otoro Sushi in Midtown. While the service was just okay, the food itself was extremely underwhelming—especially considering we spent around $120.

My brother ordered the vegetable ramen, which unfortunately had no flavor at all. Even after adding a significant amount of hot sauce, it was still bland and unpleasant. He took only two bites before realizing he couldn’t eat it.

Given that the rest of the food we ordered was also not enjoyable, we politely asked (the manager) if the ramen could be removed from the bill. The staff (manager) refused and instead insisted on exchanging it for another item. This was frustrating because my brother is strictly vegetarian, and the restaurant has very limited vegetarian options. Since he already disliked the food, he didn’t want to choose something else he likely wouldn’t enjoy.

What bothered us most was the lack of flexibility or consideration. Under the circumstances, it would have been the honorable and customer-focused thing to simply remove the one item we requested, especially since it was barely touched.

Overall, the experience did not live up to the price point, and we left feeling disappointed rather than satisfied.

Just want to note that the server had great customer service, if the management had been flexible I would’ve come back.

Zero Stars. We had a large party reservation here a few weeks ago at 7 pm. After waiting for over 15 minutes, someone came over to bring us waters. We kindly asked for straws after the waters were set down. The worker returned & threw the straws on the table with an irritated look.

Around another 20 minutes go by & no one had came over to grab our drink orders. My friend decides to go up & ask the front desk. He is told that we are waiting due to another large party. Finally a server came over to get our drinks & apps. Our drinks & apps came out one by one with long gaps of time in between. We finally placed our food order after being at the restaurant for 50 minutes.

When all of our drinks & apps had came out we were at Otoro for 90 minutes. By the time it was 9 o clock, we had only received 2 of our entrees. We asked for the bill since we had a show to get to at 9:30. When she dropped off the $800 bill, we noticed that all the items we didn’t receive were on it. We asked the server to remove the items that we didn’t receive. They finally charged us for what we received & we left.

There were other tables that were sat after us that were being served properly. So we don’t understand why we didn’t receive the same service. They also charged us a $80 gratuity despite the horrible service we received. The worst restaurant experience we have ever had. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy.

This is one of the best Sushi restaurants in Sac. As the name suggests they have great otoro sashimi and sushi. I’ve tried other things on the menu, including ramen and teriyaki dishes. All are excellent. If you are a salmon sashimi lover this place has an amazing sashimi platter. Maybe the best thing about Otoro is that it’s open until 11 so you can satisfy your late night sush cravings.
