Maty’s African Restaurant is more than just great food — it’s a place full of warmth, culture, and community spirit. Every dish tastes homemade and full of love. I’ll be recommending it to all my friends!

After seeing all the good reviews I was very excited to try this place. Unfortunately my experience was not as good as others. The lamb was so tough and chewy and the beef wrap was even tougher it’s like these were the cheaper cuts of meat. The rice was even hard I fed my lamb to my dog. The customer service was good however I’m unsure if I’m willing to try another item on the menu.

Super delicious food and great prices. One dish of peanut stew was enough for 3 people. And the tilapia was superb. Authentic, affordable, and immensely tasty.

Delicious spice that COMPLETELY boosted the flavor of the peanut stew. I love their lemon rice as well.

However, my red snapper dinner with “jollof rice” and plantains was very subpar. Extremely bland to say the least.

And the plantains were severely undercooked on the inside!

Thankfully, the owner and his staff were committed to making sure I was happy so they tried making it again. It was still undercooked so they gave me a refund.

Don’t know if i’ll be back but if do, it’ll be for the peanut stew and rice with the delicious spicy sauce.

Really good portions!

We’ve gone to Maty’s at least a dozen times. We always get the whole chicken with rice. I love the food but the spice level is very inconsistent with each visit. For example, yesterday the rice was way too spicy for me. While sometimes its not very spicy at all. Even my wife, who loves spicy food, was surprised by the spice level. Ideally, Maty’s would be consistent on this and perhaps generally have things only moderately spicy?

My first time eating African food and I loved everything I had. More so the waitress was awesome helping me and my friend who flew in from FL because he seen a video about them go viral. The hidden gem is the juice they make. The berry mint and ginger juice were easily my favorite. The chicken had so much flavor and was juicy. The portion sizes were very large and even being full I wanted to keep eating because it tasted so good. Loved the fried plantains & both appetizers. A hole in the wall place that packs some serious flavor! Great place!

********UPDATE*******************

Went back with some friends from FL and service was even better if I could give 10stars I would. The owner was there as well so we got a picture and even tried a new juice they make.

The Cons: The parking sucks.

The review:

We went to Matys on a Sunday afternoon. There was no wait, and the owner came to our table to take our order. Our food took about 15 minutes to come and it smelled heavenly. We had the Egg rolls, Chicken Yassa & Red Snapper. The food was so flavorful and piping hot and fresh. The meala come with a side (we both had Jollof), and a side of sauteed onions in a zesty, delicious sauce. They give you a FREE bottle of water upon seating, which is nice because this food packs a little heat (spice) to it. Friendly atmosphere, good food. I hugged our waitress! I definitely recommend it.

My first time yesterday. I absolutely love the jollof rice as it reminds me of a really good fried rice. Wasn’t too salty or anything. Close to perfect.

The fataya if that’s the name was an easy 10/10. Spice was perfect and the little onion sauce that came with it was on point.

The grilled red snapper however was my main target as it is one of my favorite fish. I don’t think it was grilled but fried then prolly put on flame. Idk but didn’t seemed or tasted grill to me. The snapper was also a bit over cooked so a little too dry for me. The seasoning was a little too salty but the sauce did its thing.

I really love this food and will be back. Hopefully next time I can request my snapper to be cooked less and less salt and would’ve been perfect.
