On our drive back to California from Reno, I was seriously craving sushi. I searched along our route and Tokyo House Japanese Restaurant popped up on both Google and Yelp with decent reviews, so my husband and I decided to give it a try.
We ordered a few sushi rolls, a rice plate with beef and vegetables, and chicken potstickers. I’ll start with the positives: the woman who took our order over the phone was very kind and professional, and our food was ready right on time when we arrived. The restaurant itself was also very clean, which we appreciated. We took everything to go since we were continuing our road trip.
Unfortunately, once we started eating, we were really disappointed. While the pricing was reasonable, the food quality just didn’t match the reviews. The beef had almost no flavor, the rice was bland, and the overall dish felt very under-seasoned. The sushi was simply okay not terrible, but not something I’d go out of my way for.
The biggest letdown, though, was the chicken potstickers. They were burned on the outside and when we opened them up, there was barely any filling inside. They tasted dry and overcooked, which was really disappointing.
It wasn’t a horrible experience overall, but definitely not memorable in a good way.
Would I come back? No.
Would I recommend it? Probably not.
The service and cleanliness were solid, but when it comes to Japanese food, flavor and execution matter most and unfortunately, this just didn’t deliver for us.

Crazy to find amazing sushi way out here. Tokyo House is easily the best sushi spot in Ridgecrest. The quality and freshness are top notch here. I’ve been trying to find a sushi here in Ridgecrest that I really enjoyed and here it is. What’s so impressive is that their sushi is on par with what you’d expect from a bigger city.

On my last visit, a Tuesday lunch, the fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful. I highly recommend the Alaskan Roll and the Jessica Roll, and don’t skip the classic salmon and tuna nigiri—they were simple, fresh, and perfect. They also remodeled and I really enjoy the new ambiance.

Me and my wife have been going to Tokyo house for many years and were skeptical when hearing ownership had changed – but boy were we pleasantly surprised! The new owner Leo rocks!

He’s completely renovated the restaurant with new flooring, ceiling panels, complete style and decor update, and most impressively – a completely new HVAC system that keeps the restaurant cool even during our brutal summers!

The menu is largely the same, excepting the sushi menu – which has been totally revamped! Food and sushi quality has also gone up as well – and you can tell the difference!

I ordered the Sashimi plate – and was extremely impressed with the presentation, quantity, and quality, AND real genuine wasabi! Seriously, it was the most beautiful plate of sashimi I’ve ever seen in my life

The new owner Leo cares deeply about this restaurant, his employees, and customers. He is at the restaurant working at the sushi bar and walking around interacting with customers and helping out constantly.

Me and my wife 100% recommend the new and improved Tokyo House to anyone, it’s cemented as our #1 favorite restaurant in Ridgecrest (aside from Mon Reve!)

I ordered the spicy garlic shrimp with fried rice and miso soup. I also got some soft shell crab sushi. The food itself was alright. shrimp had a great flavor, but it was kind of chewy. However, the sushi was delicious. The food isn’t even the best part. The best part is the hibachi experience. Watching your food being made in front of you is a treat. And to add on to it, our chef and waiter were really kind and helpful.

We went at around 12:30 pm. Our waitress was Winnie and she was very nice! And always made sure we had what we need.
Our chef was Mois (I hope I spelled their names right). He was very nice and had some awesome tricks. We got the teriyaki chicken and it was the best I’ve ever had. We also got the 2-14 and a California roll, very good as well.
It was a little quiet because we went so early but it created a relaxing atmosphere.
I would recommend to everyone.

By far the best sushi in Ridgecrest. Habachi grill is also available. Friendly staff and very accommodating. Very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

Update! New owners! Still great service and food!

Hostess was the rudest person I’ve encountered in ridgecrest so far. I can’t believe they have somebody that rude up on the counter food was okay, not worth the 100 dollars.

Edit, owner reached out to me and made it better, I appreciate the work they went through for that!

I’m not sure if our waitress was the bartender, hostess or our waitress. She was trying to do it all and failed. There was plenty of waitress staff to take care of us. Food was obviously forgotten in the back based on her expression when another waitress asked her where our food was. At the end she offered a free drink, we said no. Then gave us a discount, which was nice bit there were things we were charged for that we did order but didn’t get. In the end we did get our cold food and overcooked after the reheated it to barely warm. So disappointing because I do go there occasionally. The summer staff was much better.
