The service and atmosphere were good, and the portions were generous. However, the food itself was just okay. I was disappointed that the torta wasn’t made with traditional bolillo bread—instead it tasted like the French bread you’d get from Walmart. The meat lacked flavor, and some pieces were overly crispy and hard to chew. The chips and salsa also weren’t impressive; the red salsa tasted like a typical store-bought version, and the house green salsa had almost no flavor or spice at all. Overall, it wouldn’t be my first choice for Mexican food.

El Rancho Viejo in Mishawaka serves up a slice of Tex-Mex cuisine in a vibrant and festive setting, making it a solid choice for those looking for a lively dining atmosphere. The restaurant checks many of the boxes for those craving traditional Tex-Mex dishes, with a menu that, while predictable, delivers on flavor and quality.

The drink selection at El Rancho Viejo may not break new ground, especially when compared to the more inventive offerings available at other local establishments. However, the traditional margaritas stand out for their execution—simple, inexpensive, refreshing, and well-suited to complement the spicy and robust flavors of the menu.

We opted for a later dinner and noted a sense of urgency in the service, as the staff seemed keen to prepare for closing despite our arrival a comfortable 90 minutes before the end of service. This did impart a slight rush to our meal, which might detract from the overall dining experience for some.

The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the tableside guacamole. This dish was a standout, showcasing the quality of ingredients and the culinary skills of the staff, and went well with the provided tortilla chips. It was both a visual treat and a delight for the palate.

Service was notably efficient, with our waitress managing to be both swift and attentive. The food itself arrived promptly and was well-prepared, hitting the mark for what one would expect from a reputable Tex-Mex restaurant.

In summary, while El Rancho Viejo might not offer the most innovative menu, it provides a dependable and enjoyable dining experience, especially highlighted by excellent traditional dishes like their fresh guacamole. If in the Mishawaka area and in the mood for some Tex-Mex flavors, El Rancho Viejo is worth considering, particularly for those who appreciate a quick and lively meal setting.

It was a Wednesday in Mishawaka—a town of honest toil and hungry souls—when we crossed the threshold of El Rancho Viejo. The air was thick with the scent of sizzling iron and the promise of adventure! The atmosphere? Spirited! The service? Attentive, like a sherpa guiding a weary traveler through the Pyrenees. The margarita Wendy had —cool, crisp, and citrusy—was the nectar of the gods themselves. Yes she ordered the large one. Google reviewers weren’t lying; the cantina was on fleek as the kid’s say.
But we were there to continue our Great Nacho Quest. A saga started years when the hard rock café and our beloved Nachospalooza departed town for a more urban locale two hours away. They had been the peak of our Nacho Journey. We came to El Rancho Viejo seeking a new peak, a new Kilimanjaro of appetizers! When they arrived on a plate too hot to touch we anticipated a peak that touched the very heavens. So the journey began, but as the mist cleared, what did we find? Not a majestic summit, but a pleasant, grassy hilltop. Delightful? Yes. Legendary? Alas, no.
The chicken was a triumph—finely shredded and authentic, a far cry from the uninspired, tasteless “chunks” we encountered at a Chili’s Grill & Bar earlier this month. It had soul! It had texture! However, the beef… oh, the beef. It promised a rhapsody of spice but arrived with the muted whisper of a library book. It was standard fare, my friends. A solid trek for the casual wanderer, but for those of us seeking the rooftop of the world, the search continues!

The manager of this place doesn’t know what the word ‘entree’ means. He claims ‘entree’ is an “appetizer” , lol. My friends and I have really like this place’s food for a long time but I regretfully say I am not coming back to this place anymore.
We had two coupons. Coupon number 1 was: BUY 1 ENTREE AND 2 DRINKS AT REGULAR PRICE GET 50% OFF 2ND ENTREE. Coupon number 2 was: BUY ANY 2 ENTREES AND 2 DRINKS AT REGULAR PRICE GET A STARTER FREE TO SHARE!
This evening, my husband and I ordered one Taco De Tripa dinner and one Leon Special, which means we ordered two entrees. We also ordered Pepsi and Pina Colada, which means two drinks as well, thinking we could redeem Coupon number 1 since we fulfilled the condition of that coupon. Before ordering, we showed our coupon to the man serving our table, and he said to use the coupon when we got the bill. The server was a gentleman, so we didn’t get suspicious. But to our utter surprise, after getting the bill, when we showed the coupon, the manager came and told us that ‘Entree’ means ‘appetizer’, and since we didn’t order two appetizers, we couldn’t redeem that coupon. Needless to say, he was kinda rude and arrogant.
On the same evening, my friends tried to use Coupon number 2. They ordered according to that coupon’s condition, but the restaurant charged 50% of the price of the appetizer, which was supposed to be fully free. Yes, that manager wasn’t convincing again.
I am a food lover, and I have tried almost every well-rated food place in South Bend, Granger, and Mishawaka. When I write a review, I try to ignore small, ignorable mistakes by restaurants, but this time I couldn’t help myself. I felt scammed by this restaurant. It’s not about a few bucks (probably $7 or $8), it’s about a restaurant being honorable and honest. My friends and I will refrain from going to this place. If you don’t want to be scammed, avoid this place.

The first time we came the food was very good and the staff was friendly! Came back again and found the same results. The food is delicious and abundant. Staff are friendly, helpful, and professional. We were in the market for our Mexican go-to and I think this is it! (after our previous one received citations multiple times from the health department)

So We ordered here for delivery through Grubhub at 7:30pm. The initial Grubhub driver dropped the order so a new driver was assigned. ten minutes after being assigned she gets a call from the restaurant telling her to cancel the order because they closed at 8pm and she wasn’t going to wait for the driver to pick up because she has to drive home. The driver gets there 10 minutes later and no one’s there and she has to cancel the order. Very poor customer service. If you have an order that’s been paid for and you’re open to 9pm don’t close early, wait for the food to be picked up. I could understand if the driver was going to be there after closing but that wasn’t the case. I guess I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

The atmosphere was beautiful. My steak tacos lacked flavor even though my friend said his food was good. The salsa with the chips was too spicy for the average family. The service was decent. We had to ask for refills, the check, to go boxes. The server never asked how our food was. The tacos were barely warm.

We ordered the El Patron Ribeye tacos, which were more like thin flank steaks and overdone. We also ordered Chile Rellenos as a side, but they used mozzarella cheese instead of Oaxaca cheese or Chihuahua cheese. The rich salsa roja sauce was bland and the pepper was swimming in the sauce, way too much.

To top it off, we ordered Queso Fundido as an appetizer, they used a white cheese sauce instead of the traditional Oaxaca cheese, even Queso quesadilla cheese would have been better.

Now that we know we won’t be returning, we’ve decided to keep searching for a better Mexican restaurant. The menu has been declining in quality over the last couple of visits. They claimed to have a new manager from the Niles location since that one burned down, but the food was still subpar. The only saving grace was the guacamole, beans, and rice.

Typical Midwestern Mexican restaurant. Very clean inside and the typical Mexican restaurant furniture. The server was very nice, attentive, and quick. A fairly normal sized menu compared to some other local places. Food came out quick. Salsa was good. Queso fundido was good, but mostly chorizo and not a lot of queso. Rice and beans were good but not the best I’ve had. Chori Pollo was good, though the chicken was very thin and a bit dry.
