We all got the brisket and when you put on that amazing sauce in my Pic, it is sooooo good!!! The baked beans were good, what they call fried taters we call fried chips lol, if that helps, you only get 2 hushpuppies with your sandwich but order a side of them because they are delicious!!

Bbq was okay. Mountain sauce was a good addition. Beans and slaw (which I try at all bbq restaurants) were okay, but not stellar. Service was excellent. Our waitress was very accommodating and friendly. We liked the rustic decor and atmosphere.

Wow, what a find! I stopped her randomly as I was cruising the Blue Ridge parkway, looking at the leaves, mountains and everything in-between.

I got hungry and decided to head to the closet town to me, and happened upon this place after getting some gas and snacks at a gas station heading into town. My girlfriend is not from North Carolina, so I wanted to give her some NC BBQ experience, and this place DID not disappoint, in fact, they inspired me to smoke my own baked potatoes at home, who knew the smoker could make a mean baked potato? Well, these guys (and gals) apparently.

The inside is a typical NC BBQ joint – old cigarette advertisements, as well as Pepsi, metallic sculptures, folk art and the like.

We both got sandwiches, as it was just lunch and we had a nice dinner at home planned, so I got the brisket sandwich, and she got the pulled pork, both were good, but we both really enjoyed the brisket. The sauces on offer were also great, I tried them all, as a few were to spicy for her, but none the less, they all had great flavor and depth, and even the spicy ones had different elements other than “heat”.
The star of the show was the “Smoked mashed potatoes” they potatoes on the smoker and smoke them for a few hours and then turn them into mash with butter, some cream and garlic and onion power, topped with cheese these mashed potatoes changed my world. As I said at the start of this review, I will be copying this idea at home, very shamelessly. I am glad I spotted them, and even happier that our lovely waitress told me they were life changing.

Adorable decor and amazing service to go along with the excellent food. We all had BBQ pork plates and tried the baked beans, green beans, and fried potatoes for sides. All were excellent and the sauces were fabulous as well. The banana pudding dessert was a nice way to wrap up the meal. The staff were so accommodating helping make sure that our daughter with celiacs could eat there safely. They even made her some gluten free banana pudding by not including any cookies in the mix (and no cross contamination). Fabulous experience all around here and I would highly recommend to anyone looking for good BBQ in the area.

No matter what AI might tell you, Galax Smokehouse is not the home of the world’s largest lint ball. Upon finding this unfortunate news out we decided to stay for lunch. The Service was super southern-friendly. The food was amazing (those sauces…mmmmmm) and the staff was so much fun! My kids helped Anthony (Red Beard) play a little joke on his co-worker. We had a great time and already plan to make this place a detour the next time we go south. Make sure to ask for Anthony’s ginger-ale. 🙂

On a weekend roadtrip we passed through Galax and stopped for lunch. What a fun restaurant to go to! We had the meatloaf plate (yes meatloaf at a barbeque place). It was phenomenal!!! Besides the bread and hush puppies, all of the food is gluten free. The dedicated gluten free fryer was down, but who needs french fries when you have delicious smoked mashed potatoes, green beans and sweet coleslaw. We will definitely come here again when traveling home.

I picked the Galax Smokehouse for a late lunch during the Hillbilly Dayz street festival. There were a few other diners when I went in and all tables were full except one when I was leaving. I was promptly greeted and taken to my table and my drink order was taken. I needed a little extra time to peruse the menu before deciding on a small pulled pork barbecue platter. It came with one side and I chose fried potatoes which were the most flavorful fried potatoes I’ve ever had. I think they were sprinkled with seasoned salt but I’m not sure what gave them the special flavor but I thought it was delicious. The potatoes were thinly sliced and cooked to have a little crunch but not hard and dry. The pork barbecue was moist and tender with no visible fat. It had a good flavor and the addition of the sauces brought out the flavor. The hush puppies were what I expected and had a hint of onion flavor. The outside was crunchy with a moist inside that was cooked completely but not dry. The bread was like a piece of Texas toast that had not been toasted. It was soft and had a pleasing taste. I got unsweetened iced tea (because I have Type 2 diabetes) and it was very good. It was the correct strength and not watered down. My food was served very quickly and the wait staff was attentive and helpful. I wanted to try their FAMOUS banana pudding because Southern Living magazine had featured it. On my first bite I recognized banana flavored pudding along with soft vanilla wafers. The bananas were the right consistency and not overripe. It was topped with a swirl of whipped cream. It truly was fabulous. My entire dining experience was pleasing and I was happy with the quality of the food and the service I received.

We always enjoy a stop here on our way home. The pulled pork with Alabama white sauce is delicious Smoked chicken platter with smoked mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and hush puppies were beyond tasty. Be sure to leave room for homemade banana pudding. If we lived closer, we would be regulars. The staff will make feel like family.

Ordered Texas Brisket Moist. The beans, slaw and tea were good. The brisket was dry so they brought a dish of diced pork. It too was dry. Management was very understanding, did the right thing and compted the meal.

We’ve been to The Galax Smokehouse before and I don’t imagine we’ll stop coming back. The smoked meats are solid, the sides really good, but what makes it so great are the sauces and service. Their homemade sauces are some of the best I’ve had. Definitely get some to take home. If they have the pork loin available, put the menu down and make that your choice.

We’ve had Anthony as our server regularly and his suggestions on ordering are excellent, his humor fantastic and his ongoing (“one-sided”) competition with fellow worker, Ashley is hilarious. Ask her about the amount of snakes in Claytor Lake.

If you’re in Galax, even the area, it’s definitely worth making this place your choice for dinner!
