We decided to stop in Christiansted for breakfast/lunch at Toast Diner as we traveled from the West End of the island out to the North Shore. The reviews on several sources for Toast looked reasonably good. We especially liked the idea that we would be able to choose between breakfast or lunch; it all depended on the mood we might be in when we got there.
When we arrived, there were several folks at outdoor tables getting ready to leave, which meant we had to wait only about six or seven minutes to be seated. It should be noted, however, that my husband said to me, “It looks like you shouldn’t order the French toast.” I wasn’t sure what he meant at first, but then he pointed out that the folks who had the table immediately before us had basically eaten very little of the French toast on their plate. That should’ve been the red flag…
Before I go any further, let me say this about the wait staff: they were great. If ever there were a group of folks who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons, they were the ones. When somebody came to take our order, she was honest and said this: “We’re out of a lot of things — so we’re gonna play a game. You go ahead and order what you want, and I will tell you if we have it or not.“ Second red flag, right? The first three things that we ordered between us weren’t there. We wound up settling for a turkey club for me and a BLT for my husband. He ordered a Diet Coke, only to find out three or four minutes later when the server came out to share that they didn’t have any more Diet Coke, and did he want something else? He chose ginger ale. The server returned in a moment with a standard can of ginger ale. That’s it: no glass, no cup, no ice, just a can of soda. That really should’ve been the red flag that send us packing. But we had already ordered.
Anyhow, our food came out in a reasonable amount of time and, well … We should have heeded all those flags. It was underwhelming. The bacon in my husband‘s BLT was somehow burned AND underdone all at the same time. That’s quite a feat! The fact that they didn’t have any white bread and he had to settle for wheat bread (which he really doesn’t like) made the meal one degree more undesirable. My turkey club was nothing spectacular, although it seemed that the turkey, lettuce, tomato, and bacon were all between the middle slice of toast and the upper slice: it didn’t seem like there was much of anything at all between the middle slice and the bottom slice. It was kind of like a “turkey, bacon, and bread” sandwich. And while the top slice seemed to be toasted perfectly enough, the very bottom face of the sandwich told a much different story: it was pretty dang burnt. (It wasn’t until after we had left that my husband said to me how he had smelled the burnt bread on my sandwich as soon as it came out.) I also ordered a side salad, that came with no dressing. When I asked for Italian the server said “if we don’t have it is there something else I can get you, like ranch or thousand island?” I told her thousand island. Lo and behold, that’s what I got!
At one point one of the servers attempted to explain why so much was out of stock, saying something about the ownership changing the menu in major ways, so that meant they weren’t ordering certain things. From what we could figure out, those certain things were white bread, plantains, hamburgers… I would also note that we observed around us people sending stuff back, or leaving their table with much food on their plate, or being told what they had ordered wasn’t available and did they want something else. A woman at the next table — unsolicited — told my husband how her bacon was really fatty and by and large undone.
Let me say again that the staff was really great: never sour and always as accommodating as the diner’s very spotty inventory would allow. The food, however, was subpar. We left behind a little bit more than what we ate. Needless to say, we won’t be back.

We enjoyed our breakfast at Toast. The food along with the breakfast cocktails were good. The service was good and the atmosphere too. It is down an alley off the main boardwalks from Shupe’s burgers. They were short staffed when we were there but were attentive as they could be and so kind. Remember you’re on island time and enjoy it for what it is.

Impressive breakfast on island time. Lots of locals seem to start their day here, which is a good sign. Had rum cake french toast grilled to a crispy outside with a soft center, along with a side of two eggs, scrambled soft perfectly. A solid breakfast treat worth repeating.

The food was tasty. Nothing spectacular, but still savory and the portions were good. My frustration was 1) the wait (nothing to be done about that) and 2) the server forgot to put our order in. Either thing on their own would have been fine, but waiting for 20 minutes for a stool at the bar, then waiting another 30 minutes for our breakfast made it that our food wasn’t enjoyed as much as inhaled from hunger. Would give them a second chance on a less busy day. But I’ll probably avoid unless I have a backup plan.

Toast, pancakes, etc are highly toasted. Too much for my taste. See pictures. Order yours lightly toasted unless you like it borderline burnt.
