Add-ons: Savory Eclairs
we were won over from the first bite. The chicory carried a caramel sweetness with no bitterness, balanced by creamy cheese and apple sauce—a vegetarian dish that tasted like meat.
Finger Lime Kusshi Oyster
The Sunseeker oysters were paired with Salt Spring Island finger lime/yuzu vinegar gel and a hint of chili for flavor. Perfectly balanced.
Sea Bream Crudo
the macadamia nut sorbet on top—a magical texture and pairing! It added a rich, nutty aroma, complemented by various citrus vinegar sauces, yet different from the fruity acidity of the oysters.
Kangaroo Loin Broth
The broth had a five-spice powder flavor reminiscent of Lanzhou beef noodle soup, served with brioche and butter. My Chinese palate felt it needed a different staple to go with it .
Lamb Loin Vegemite
Meat was exceptionally well-prepared—likely sous-vide before searing—with minimal fiber and a clean, lamby flavor without any gaminess. The homemade Vegemite offered a restrained fermentation taste, while the pumpkin tart on the side added distinct layers .
Tonka Bean Custard
The vanilla custard had a layer on top that I initially thought was red bean paste, but it turned out tart, like hawthorn paste. Topped with a honey sorbet.
Petite Four
chocolate contained popping candy, and even the meringue had three layers of texture. The only downside was that the cacao itself won’t melt into your month
The overall service was smooth and comfortable, and the cozy, intimate atmosphere felt like visiting the chef’s home. This experience definitely won us over ❤️.
Burdock&Co
From a purely technical standpoint, the cooking is impressive. Every component was prepared with confidence and clarity, and several moments landed with genuine surprise and real excellence. That said, taken as a whole, some dishes struggled to communicate a clear identity. Ideas occasionally stacked on top of one another until the plate felt more theoretical than intuitive, less about flavor momentum and more about concept density.
We supplemented the tasting with a few shared starters, and somewhat unexpectedly, the buttermilk fried chicken emerged as our least favorite bite of the evening. It was fine, but unremarkable, especially given its near-mythic status according to our server, who assured us it was the most popular item on the menu and permanently untouchable.
Service throughout the meal was excellent, polished, attentive, and genuine. However, the tableside storytelling veered towards excess. The presentations were long, detailed, and often overwrought, to the point where the narrative sometimes overshadowed the plate itself.
Burdock & Co. is clearly a restaurant with ambition, skill, and thoughtfulness hence their Michelin Star. When everything aligns in a dish, it’s compelling and memorable. But when it didn’t, the experience felt overly intellectualized. For diners drawn to evolving menus and big ideas, even if not every idea fully lands, this restaurant is worth the visit especially if looking to explore outside the downtown Vancouver area.
The food? Unreal. Every dish was a masterclass in flavour and balance, showcasing thoughtful ingredients and bold creativity. You could taste the care in every bite.
A highlight of the evening was getting to chat with the owner, who was so kind and welcoming. It added a personal touch that made the experience even more memorable.
If you’re looking for a place that delivers impeccable food, heartfelt service, and a sense of occasion, Burdock and Co is it. We left feeling celebrated, nourished, and already planning our next visit.
We enjoyed the “New Year’s Eve” tasting menu at $200 per person, plus a mandatory 20% ($80) gratuity. There were no drinks included for this cost, which was surprising, as the other pre-set menu was priced at $165 each. I also hope the gratuity is split amongst the staff appropriately.
Regardless, our experience with the wait staff (Danielle?) was lovely. We didn’t find the explanation of the dishes too ‘over the top’ or ‘long winded’ Nice and succinct, straight to the point so we could enjoy our food.
On the point of food, while there were a few dishes that were very “wow” worthy, I felt there were some dishes that fell short. Initially, we started with the Geoduck, which had an island citrus vinegrette that nearly punched your tastebuds to the floor. No easing into this experience!
Most noteworthy dish included the potato gratin, (I was impressed at the depth of flavour & use of butterscotch to balance the salt) and rabbit soup dumpling. (Beautifully, velvety, rich broth)
I wish the squab had some sort of ‘crunchy’ element, as I found the meaty texture of the breast overwhelming at times. Wing with the brioche was delightful.
The BBQ shortrib was cooked to perfection, but again, had an incredibly fragrant sauce that smacks you in your tastebuds. (Might not be the best for those folks with ‘cilanto-soap’ gene, as it tasted similar to grass clippings for me – My partner felt otherwise, but he enjoys cilantro)
One thing to note, which could be upsetting for some folks: I am 5 years sober from alcohol. I noted my sobriety on the text which was sent to confirm our attendance, along with noting it to our server.
They failed to mention there was sherry in the Uni Gelato, which I immediately tasted. (Strong initial liqueur flavour that fades as you eat)
While I don’t believe consuming alcohol in small amounts with food as part of a dining experience negates my sobriety; it may be triggering for someone who is a recovering alcoholic to taste something like sherry in a dish. I wish they had mentioned something prior to, because it was certainly off-putting for me. None the less, and interesting echinoderm-based dessert I never knew was possible. Very creative.
Overall, a decent experience. I would have appreciated a few more “WOW” experiences with these dishes, but they were certainly nothing to scoff at.
Perhaps include a complimentary beverage at the $200 price point, when other tasting experiences are listed as $165? As well, there was nothing extra as a celebratory gesture, aside from a single birthday candle in a dish. Which was thoughtful and cute, but nothing to enhance the experience aside from “Oh boy, fire!”
My partner and I enjoyed our experience; however, it certainly will be a one-time try for us. Unless there is further elevation of the tasting menu and more consideration for the patrons.
Thanks for the experience, Burdock!
They said the sourdough bread was house-baked, so I ordered it, but once it cooled down a bit, it became really tough. I personally grow my own sourdough starter and bake at home, and it felt like they microwaved it to warm it up and then lightly torched it before serving. If that’s not the case, I think it would be good to experiment with a way of baking and serving it so that the bread doesn’t get tough even after it cools.
After $165 per person, the bread and two glasses of wine, (plus tax and tip) the bill came to almost $420 for two. It was not worth it at all. I honestly do not know how this place got a Michelin star. I will not go back unless I hear that they’ve significantly improved.
It was the most perfect evening we’ve ever shared. The warm, cozy atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely, and I’m grateful to the staffs for their thoughtful and kind service.
Every plating was so artistic, it felt almost too beautiful to eat.
It was my first time experiencing dishes made with flowers. The gentle floral aroma throughout the meal made it a truly joyful experience. It was such a special and satisfying evening. I hope my daughter will take me again someday!
