The Kathi kebab roll was intriguing as most places outside India don’t do a good job. So we had two to take away for the next day picnic lunch. And they were the real McCoy – made in a roomali rolti and not a tortilla. Substantially big portion filled with delicious tangy chicken and no lettuce in sight- we could have shared half and been fine but greedily ate one each!! Accompanying green chutney was excellent to dip into. The green apple relish was outstanding (not necessarily authentic but I will be attempting to make that as part of my own pickle repertoire).
It’s rare that we have more than one meal in the same restaurant on holiday but we went back for dinner the day after- excellent service. We tried the ragda pattice which was huge and made a good attempt to showcase Bambaiya chaat. I am going to be a teeny bit critical as it just falls short of what I expected having grown up eating the stuff in Bombay ( yes it is Bombay to the old guard, never Mumbai!!) – it just missed the spot. Nevertheless it was very good as were the green chicken tikkas.
We wanted to try the non veg thali for lunch the next day, our last in Gibraltar. Unfortunately the place was packed and as it would have taken an hour we settled for the samosa chaat- outstanding and they even brought us a bit more of the tamarind chutney because my husband loved it. We had a repeat chicken kathi roll which was as brilliant as the day before.
I believe desserts are made in the restaurant and not brought in but we didn’t try any. The portion sizes are generous- choose less if you need room for dessert.
My son and husband have eaten the lamb chops before and would recommend them. They have tried the sushi as well and said it was good.
Looking forward to eating the thaali the next time.
I am also deeply appreciative of the fact that we were not offered the ubiquitous papad and chutney- no self respecting Indian eats that as a ‘starter’ or waiting for food!!! So it showed a personal cultural understanding. Extremely well done for that!!!
When I asked about selling a kebab with doner meat/chicken and naan, stated they don’t do that and offered suggestions. I chose a chicken tandoori dish with salad and a naan, all separately. I paid £4.50 for cucumber, onion and lettuce in a small tub, around £3 for a dry, overcooked naan and £11 for my 5 pieces of chicken tandoori.. the only solution offered was this, meaning I spent £39.50 on sushi and a makeshift kebab..
There is a kebab place next door for £8, I understand the owner not wanting to recommend other businesses but to make no alternative than to make me pay £18.50 for these 3 separate ingredients was ludicrous.
I’d avoid this place for sushi, naan and salad. Maybe their curries are better.. but I won’t hold my breath
Our server was fantastic also. We were there at a slow time, so she spent plenty of time with us, explaining the menu, helping my wife chose from the rolls that could be made gluten free, asking us about ourselves and our visit to Gibraltar, etc. She was incredibly pleasant and kind, and made the whole experience that much better.
Besides the tables inside there are a good number of tables outside, most of them covered in case of strong sun. And it was nice that our dog was very welcome to be with us at an outside table.
Food here is amazing. We’ve had our share of Indian food – most of the times very good one. But this place here really beats them all. Food (and the curry pastes) are prepared fresh by order. Which might take a while when it’s busy….but it’s so worth the wait. Besides the indian food items there are also japanese items on the menu, like sushi and sashimi. Hence the name of the restaurant.
Some of the dishes we’ve ordered:
– Onion Bhaja
– Tuna & Salmon Sashimi Platter
– Dal Khus Khus
– Plain, Butter and Garlic Naan
– Chana Masala
– Dal Makhani
– Vegetable Kalonji
– Fried Soft Shell Crab
– Jera And Tawa Rice
– Gulab Jamun (dessert)
The Naan was always baked to perfection, great flavours. In all the pastes you could taste that this is freshly and home-made, not a ready-made paste you can buy in a supermarket. Ingredients all fresh and of high quality.
On most dishes you can tell what kind of spicyness you’d like to have. We liked it hot, and it was. Loved every bite of it.
It was really all great here. But the very favourite items for us were: Dal Khus Khus, Chana Masala and the Dal Makhani. And this coming from me, because I really am a carnivore who loves meat. But these vegetarian dishes here were just divine. Even though they got plenty of dishes with meat.
Try the Gulab Jamun for dessert. Such a sweet, savory dish. Never had it before. Good stuff!
Besides the fair prices and good sized dishes what really stood out was the fantastic staff. Friendly, welcoming and helpful. Never rushed, we had time to really enjoy every bite. The owner was also always good for a chat and made us really feel at home. That’s why we came here for every lunch for the three days we’ve stayed in Gibraltar. Loved the place. Best Indian we’ve ever had. We miss this place.
Highly recommended!
In terms of price, the day special was an excellent value for money.
