The hospitality stood out immediately. The owners, Chris and Alex, were warm and welcoming, clearly invested in making sure guests are enjoying themselves. Our server was fantastic — friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout the evening.
This was a Daddy–Daughter date night, and the meal couldn’t have been better. The Wagyu Bites (A5 wagyu over potato rosti with truffle aioli) were unbelievably tender and packed with flavor. Gigi’s Bread, served with sea-salt honey butter, was warm, buttery, and impossible to stop eating. The Baby Lettuce Salad was fresh and perfectly balanced.
The highlight was the 14 oz Margaret Farms Wagyu Ribeye, grilled with beautiful char and cooked to a perfect medium rare. We paired it with Brussels sprouts with parmesan and Dijon, which were crisp, savory, and the perfect complement.
The atmosphere felt like a high-end neighborhood hangout — we ran into several friends and even chatted with neighboring tables.
A wonderful addition to West Ashley. We’ll absolutely be back.
Overall great experience and the owner gave us cookies as we were leaving!
We heard they opened on Saturday, we saw the menu on Sunday so we jumped right in and made a reservation for tonight. Allow me to introduce you to The Lick.
The menu and the few photos we could find on socials got us in the door. Little did we know we were about to experience the neighborhood in restaurant form.
We were enthusiastically greeted at the door by Chris, the proprietor of The Lick. As if he’s known us his whole life, he welcomed us and expressed his gratitude for our presence. Warm and fuzzy feels right out of the gate.
We were taken to a 2 top table that was wider than most restaurant 2 tops, so much so that our table butted up against another 2 top but we never felt like we were crammed in. Close enough to strike up conversation with our neighbors yet far enough away to have quiet conversation amongst ourselves. A refreshing design element that didn’t go unnoticed.
The food is neighborhood good eats….a place where you can slip in and have a great steak or perfect piece of fish or chicken, some fun starters, and homey sides.
We had:
Deviled Eggs with Jalepeño Bacon Jam
Kale Salad with Shaved Red Cabbage, roasted Squash, Carmelized Apple, Fennel, Feta, Sunflower Seed Crumble and Maple Fig Vinaigrette
Le Bilboquet- Joyce Farms Chicken, Warm Spices, Beef Tallow Fries, and Greens
Steak and Frittes- Ribeye with Sauce Au Poive, Beef Tallow Fries, and Garlic Aioli.
Peanut Butter Pie
On day 2 of business, the food came out fast and well executed. Chris checked in with us and all of his guests throughout the meal, making us feel right at home.
We need food to live, but we need the kind of hospitality that they’re dishing out at The Lick to live well.
Bravo Chris and your lovely wife Alex and thank you for loving West Ashley enough to bring the community your vision for a neighborhood gathering place.
Our table ordered an old fashion, dirty martini, chocolate martini and espresso martini. We had deviled eggs in bacon and jalapeno jam, followed by two raw oysters. For entrees we got shrimp and grits, ny strip, brussel sprouts and Mac and cheese with black truffle. Would definitely come back again soon before reservations fill up, especially since they now offer brunch and the menu looks fantastic!
The A5 wagyu bites were unforgettable! beautifully seared with that perfect caramelized crust, yet buttery and melt-in-your-mouth inside. Rich, indulgent, and cooked with incredible precision.
The lamb chops were flawless. Perfectly cooked with a gorgeous sear and a juicy, tender center. The seasoning and sauce complemented the meat without overpowering it, allowing the natural flavor to shine. Every bite was balanced and packed with flavor.
And the steak… perfection. A textbook crust on the outside and a beautifully pink, juicy interior cooked exactly to temperature. Tender, flavorful, and expertly finished with flaky salt and fresh herbs. You can truly taste the quality and the care in the preparation.
Even the plating was impressive, elegant but not overdone. This wasn’t just dinner, it was an experience.
Charleston has no shortage of great restaurants, but The Lick has absolutely earned a spot at the top of our list. We’ll definitely be back.
