We found this spot, The Flying Mexican, thanks to a passerby’s recommendation, and it turned out to be one of the best places we’ve tried in Southeast DC, especially around Eastern Market. From the moment we walked in, we loved the cozy, welcoming vibe of the restaurant.
The portion sizes were huge, which was honestly one of the best parts. The buffalo chicken sandwich was amazing — flavorful, perfectly cooked, and very satisfying. We also ordered a burrito, which was surprisingly unique and absolutely delicious. Every bite felt thoughtfully made, and we genuinely loved every part of the experience.
Overall, great food, generous portions, and a cozy atmosphere make this place a must-visit. We’d definitely come back again!

Dinner at The Flying Mexican was nothing short of impressive. The wings arrived perfectly cooked with bold, satisfying flavor—an easy 10/10. The sweet and spicy shrimp struck an ideal balance, blending sweetness with just the right touch of heat for a subtle kick. The shrimp fajitas were equally outstanding, packed with flavor and cooked to perfection—another 10/10. Even dessert held its own, rounding out the meal on a high note. Attentive, friendly service elevated the experience even further. Overall, this spot earns a well-deserved 10/10, and it’s definitely a place worth returning to.

I received a recommendation for this DC area restaurant, and boy did it not disappoint! As a fan of wrestling, I was instantly curious to visit this local eatery. The Flying Mexican is a lucha themed bar and restaurant which features authentic Mexican dishes while providing an atmosphere which celebrates the lucha libre culture.
Upon arriving we were kindly greeted by the host and promptly seated. Immediately I took notice of the great lucha themed decor. Most notably the luchador mask lights that were above the tables. These lights looked fantastic and I’d love to have one for my home. There were various pieces of artwork depicting luchadors, along with some wrestling figures, and even old school lucha matches being shown on the televisions. The centerpiece being the vibrant mural of Rey Mysterio vs The Flying Mexican across from the bar.
Our server was quick to bring us water and chips with a sweet salsa to enjoy as we perused the menu. With so many dishes to choose from I ultimately went with the Smoked Beef Birria burrito, and my friend chose some of the mambo pineapple wings, and a Flying Mexican Enchilada. It didn’t take long at all for our meals to arrive. Everything was great. My burrito was a perfect portion that ended up filling my appetite. The flavor of the birria combined with the savory consume broth blended perfectly.
During our meal, the owner Mike stopped by our table to check on us. I praised his establishment along with his choice of decor and the lucha mask lights. He told me they were custom made and it shows with the quality and aesthetic. He also mentioned that they had a covered roof top bar that is open on the weekends during the winter months, and more so during the warmer ones.
Overall, I loved this location. The atmosphere was great with the themed and unique decor. The food was excellent with good portion size, reasonable prices, and fresh quality ingredients. If you enjoy Mexican food I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are a wrestling fan especially, be sure to visit The Flying Mexican when you are in the District.

The food was delicious! Especially the Lamb Barbacoa Tacos! The atmosphere was great, the guy that I think is the owner or manager was really nice and personable and took care of us. I couldn’t stand the only server I could see. It was 4:30pm and it was not busy enough for him to not be able handle all of his duties especially with the other staff helping him out. He literally told the other staff that he couldn’t bus the table because he had to take someone’s order. The place was almost empty. I really, really enjoyed the food though. We just won’t be sitting at a table anymore, we’ll stick to the bar.

I loved the Flying Mexican! I had the steak and chicken fajitas with all the fixings. All fresh and homemade. Delicious. It has a fun, yet homey atmosphere with a lot of local art. The staff was smiling and courteous. I’d like to note how especially delicious their homemade infused tequilas were. Their margaritas are hard to top! I tried a few hehe 😉 Must try the Piña Loco Margarita!!
