I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Smoke Barrel in downtown Ellsworth, Kansas, and I can’t say enough good things about it! This fairly new BBQ spot has quickly become a favorite of mine.
From the moment I walked in, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. I decided to try the 3 meat sampler called “The Outlaw,” and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious! Each meat was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor.
The restaurant itself is small, which adds to its charm, and the atmosphere is fantastic—perfect for enjoying a great meal. I also appreciate that they are pro conceal carry, which is a big plus for me.
Overall, I highly recommend The Smoke Barrel to anyone looking for amazing BBQ and a great dining experience. I can’t wait to go back and try more of their menu!
I came in for lunch and found so many up grades and it was so organized. I had “The Outlaw” which was a taste of all their meats a home made biscuit and 2 sides. The meats had such a wonderful smoked taste with around 6 to 8 different barbeque sauces to choose from and 2 sides homemade baked beans and the most delicious macaroni and cheese with a strong cheese flavor. There was enough food for 2 to 3 meals but it was so good I ate it all and wished I would have brought half of it home as I was so full I had to walk a couple hours just to feel better from eating to much. But it was so worth it!

Opening day! November 1st, 2024
Yummy, so good . Be aware that they are just open two days a week until the owners get things established for themselves. The food is great, the owners are wonderful and the service is best of all. I would suggest you call and order your food before coming in. You can either sit in the restaurant and eat or take it to go. Everything is homemade and gluten-free. I had ribs and cowboy beans, and both were delicious and filling. The cowboy beans could be a meal in itself. The people in the picture are the cooks, servers, and owners. Try them out and find a smile on your face and a full belly.
Such a wonderful couple running this place. We’d been meaning to try it, so we grabbed a to-go order while heading to a birthday party in town — and I’m glad we did.
At first, the price gave me pause. But once we opened the containers? Worth. Every. Penny.
The double brisket was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Baked potato? On point. Mac and cheese? Creamy and delicious. Hubby’s ribs were fall-apart tender and full of smoky goodness. The house-made sauces sealed the deal, and the biscuits were soft, fluffy, and melt-in-your-mouth good.
The portions absolutely matched the price — we were full and still had leftovers for another meal.
We ordered peach cobbler and apple crisp but received two peach cobblers instead. A small disappointment, but honestly? That cobbler alone is worth another visit.
If you’re passing through, stop in. Small town spot, big flavor payoff.
Brisket is smoked to create the most tender and juicy meat you can get, the pulled pork is full of flavor and cooked to perfection, and the pork ribs are contest quality that pulls off the bone with easy without falling off.
Mac and cheese is like no other, slices of jalapeños, crusted panko on top and contains pulled meat. Not spicy, just full of cheesy goodness.
Baked beans are the best I’ve ever had. Nice smokey flavor with meat and beans.
Biscuits are the best you could ask for.
They get all their meats local which adds to the charm of this western BBQ hidden gem. And they make all their BBQ sauces in house.
Don’t be shy, they’re as friendly and welcoming as you would expect from the Midwest.
*the only downside is they are only open Friday and Saturday right now so keep in mind when planning the trip.
