Calamari was delicious. Eat everything in one bite. Get some tomato, some capers, some sauce, and some calamari for a perfect bite. Steak frites, cooked perfect!! The truffle fries were fragrant and the parm cheese added the perfect balance to the strong truffle.
Wish I had room for dessert!!
My husband and I went to Bistro Joe’s last night to celebrate our anniversary. We’re actually regulars there — we come often, bring friends for brunch, and I even hosted my birthday brunch there in October where my husband treated about 20 of our friends. The bill that day was over $1,100 with tip. We’ve always genuinely enjoyed this place and normally the service is great because the staff recognize us when we walk in.
My husband and I also own a restaurant ourselves, so we understand how the business works and we try to be very reasonable guests.
In fact, we’ve had some really great experiences there. One time we brought a family member who is gluten-free, and the general manager happened to be there. He actually took the menu and wrote on it all the items they could safely eat and how the kitchen could modify certain dishes for them. That level of care really impressed us and is part of why we’ve continued to support the restaurant.
That’s why what happened last night caught us so off guard.
Everything started off fine. But when our server was bringing our appetizers, I noticed she and the manager were having a full conversation — probably two minutes — while holding our mussels and talking over the food. It was a little odd, but I didn’t say anything.
The real issue happened when our entrées were being plated. We had ordered ribs with a side of fries. The fries came up first and were sitting on the counter next to the manager while she was pulling food from the warming trays to put on the counter for the server to grab.
While the fries were sitting there waiting to be served, the bartender walked past on her way to the restroom and casually grabbed one of our fries and ate it.
Yes — a staff member literally ate food off our plate before it was served to us.
When our waitress brought the food to the table, I politely told her that I had just seen someone eat off our plate and that it was pretty rude and honestly kind of disgusting. Our waitress was actually very kind and very apologetic, and she said she would get the manager right away.
The manager came over and said, “Oh, I saw her do that. We’re making you some new fries right now.”
That response really surprised me. New fries?
To me, the issue wasn’t the fries themselves — it was the fact that someone from the restaurant ate off our plate before it was served. As restaurant owners ourselves, we explained that to the manager and said it was extremely unsanitary and unprofessional.
The waitress came back about two minutes later with replacement fries and said the bartender was sorry and that “her hands were clean and she only touched the one fry.”
Honestly, that explanation made it worse.
The bartender never came over to apologize herself and kind of avoided us after the manager confronted her.
Again, I want to be clear that our waitress was very nice and handled the situation as best she could. But the manager could have been much more accommodating, and the bartender’s behavior — both taking the fry and then not acknowledging it — felt really inappropriate.
Considering how often we come in and how much we’ve supported the restaurant over the years, the response felt pretty dismissive. Personally, I think the meal should have been comped, or at the very least handled with a little more seriousness than simply bringing out new fries.
So I’m curious — what would you do in this situation?
Are we overreacting, or would you also find it pretty disgusting if someone from the restaurant ate food off your plate before it was served to you?
Carli was amazing. She recommended the calamari for an appetizer and the Mahi Mahi tacos for dinner and they were perfect. She was very polite and made me feel welcome. I appreciate her service.
I will be coming back soon.
