Smash House Tavern, Bloomington IL
we sat at the bar this night and had a cold beer and food. Service was great, bartenders were friendly. On to food had some wings as it was $1 night, they were good. some of the better ones in B/N and the enjoyed a Chicken Parm sandwich, it was a crispy maybe a little too crispy chicken breast with mozzarella and a red sauce it wasn’t bad at all. But the FRIES that came with it were OUTSTANDING. They were shoestring style with a covering of a garlic parm seasoning and they were perfection! For a Bar the food was at the better end of bar food.

We were excited to try this place but didn’t know what to expect since we were fans of a business that occupied it previously.

We were thrilled to learn that the newly renovated space was perfect for date night, delicious food, and darts.

The fries alone are enough to come back for….! It’s been a long time since I’ve been impressed by a fry but these did it for me.

I was curious to try to beer battered Nashville cheese cubes. They reminded me of paneer and would taste really delicious on top of a burger.

I can’t wait to come back and try more things. The Bavarian pretzel definitely caught my eye.

Our server was wonderful. Definitely will return!

We’ve gone a few times and the burgers and drinks have been really good. Nachos, cheese curds, and fries are all great. The service has always been great as well.

Disappointing experience overall. We waited about 15 minutes before I finally got up and asked for menus. Even after receiving them and waiting longer, no one came by to take our order. Servers were coming and going but never acknowledged our table.

Eventually, I had to get up and place our order at the bar. The bartender was the only positive – she was very friendly and helpful.

While waiting for our food, I noticed the table next to us receive their food. The woman was served the wrong order-a burger that might have been mine- and after she touched it, I watched the server place that same burger back on the service table. Shortly after, a food runner picked it up and brought it to our table, which I immediately returned.

Other than running food, no server ever checked on us or took responsibility for our table. The lack of service combined with the food-handling issue was extremely concerning and unacceptable. Unfortunately, this experience makes it hard to recommend or return to this restaurant.

Culinary Cronicles of Central Illinois: Smash House Tavern Review

A Homegrown Haven in Bloomington
Tucked into Bloomington’s culinary scene, Smash House Tavern is a vibrant gathering spot where hearty flavors meet warm hospitality. Owned by Jay South and staffed by a tight-knit team—including Elle South (bartender), Kennedy (server), Britney (bartender), and their daughter Jaydey—the restaurant pulses with a welcoming energy that feels like stepping into a friend’s kitchen.

Behind the Scenes: The Team
• Jay South: The owner who orchestrates the tavern’s soulful vibe.
• Elle South: Owner.
• Kennedy: A server whose charm pairs perfectly with every dish.
• Britney: Bartender extraordinaire, blending bold flavors with a smile.
• Jaydey: The next-gen team member who’s already mastering the art of hospitality.

Drinks That Elevate the Experience
Smash House Tavern’s cocktails are liquid poetry:
• Midnight Sour: A tangy, bourbon-based sipper with a twist of citrus and mystery.
• Strawberry Smash: Fresh berries muddled with mint and gin, served over ice—ideal for summer.
• Mango Tango: A tropical escape in a glass, blending mango puree with a hint of spice.
• Pineapple Bliss: Buchanan Pineapple, Cream of Coconut, Pineapple juice, Lime Juice, Angostrua Bitters.

Appetizers: Bold Beginnings
The tavern’s starters are designed for sharing (or not):
Why It Stands Out Nashville Hot Cheese Cubes Crispy, fiery, and addictive—perfect with drinks.Beer-Battered Cheese CubesGolden, gooey, and utterly comforting. Beef Tallow Fry Basket Rich, savory fries cooked to perfection. Italian Egg Rolls A twist on tradition with Italian-inspired filling. Wings (Nashville Hot) Spicy, smoky, and impossible to stop at one.

Mains: Comfort Reimagined
Every entrée tells a story:
• Italian Beef: Tender, slow-cooked beef piled high on a crusty roll, dripping with au jus.
• Cowboy Smash: A hearty burger or sandwich (ask for the secret sauce!).
• Steakhouse Salad: Fresh greens, crumbled blue cheese, and a zesty vinaigrette.
• Chicken Parm Sandwich: Crispy chicken, melted mozzarella, and garlic parm fries—classic done right.

Live Music Nights: Thursday & Saturday
The tavern transforms into a lively hotspot with live music, creating an electric atmosphere. Whether you’re sipping a Midnight Sour or devouring Nashville Hot Wings, the rhythm of the room amplifies every bite.

Final Verdict
Smash House Tavern isn’t just a meal—it’s a moment. From the South family’s warmth to the bold flavors on every plate, this Bloomington gem serves up comfort food with a side of community. Visit on a music night, order the Strawberry Smash, and let the tavern’s magic leave you craving more.

This was our first time here. We figured we had to order a smash burger since we were at Smash House. Burger was average. Probably would have been better if was had been served hot, but it came out near room temperature. It was certainly not worth the $10 price. Most fast food burgers are better. Was looking forward to the beef tallow fries, but they were colder than the burger. The buffalo wings were warmer but overly salted and not spicy. Little kids would be fine with them. The draft beer was cold and very good. Nice selection of beers too. The mixed drinks we had we the best part of the experience. We’re probably not returning here to dine.

Food was good. But I am not happy about the price of pool there. $10.00 for 30 minutes is a ripoff. They need to lower there prices to a dollar before I ever come back there. Wonder why you don’t get any business on the pool side, because people drop there jaw when they see the price.

Normally always great food and service, however I left tonight feeling a bit frustrated. I usually stop by every Friday. Several times I have frequented this spot, and when I have a certain waitress, she has taken away my food or drink before I was even done with consuming it. I understand wanting to keep up with cleaning up with customer messes, but have the common courtesy of asking your customers if they’re done with their food or drink before taking it away??? All I did was go to the bathroom, I come back and find my fries taken. I would have gladly finished them, and all you’re doing is wasting my food and money! It makes no sense to me considering the fact I’ve paid good money to purchase said food or drink…. It feels insulting. They came to check on me too, and tried to take away my nearly finished drink!? Come on man, just please ask me before touching my food and/or drink. I wouldn’t normally say anything about it but it has been multiple occasions now and it rubs me the wrong way and makes me reconsider coming back. I’m usually a regular customer, but if you can’t respect the money I spend to keep your place going than what is the point?? Love the food, but the service is going downhill.

Burger basket was overpriced for what you got. Burger was overdone, but the fries were great. Service was slow for a lunch hour. Tge decor is too dark for my taste, but the music playing and TV neutralized that aspect

It’s unfortunate to leave a 1 star. I went to an event held there where it came with a free drink. More than one waitress served myself and my friend. We confirmed with each waitress that our free drink was taken care of. When provided the bill, it was not on there and I confirmed with a review. The following day I was charged an additional $11 for the supposed free drink. When I contacted the restaurant on 3 occasions the manager was not there and I left my name and number for a call back, I never received it. So not only was I over charged I was never contacted for a resolution despite 3 attempts to reach the manager or anyone to help. Other than that the food was great and the people were nice. However, I will not be returning and my suggestion is to pay in cash!
