Handel’s Homemade Ice cream, Handel’s Ice cream started in Youngstown ,Ohio in 1945. Alice Handel started making home made ice cream with fresh fruits picked from her own garden. selling it to customers that were waiting for there cars getting fixed in her husband’s automobile shop. She was selling so much Ice cream her husband built her a store on property and Handel’s Homemade ice cream was on its way to be the best ice cream on the planet.

Whenever you’re in the Santee area, you have to make a pit stop at Handel’s! There are so many incredible ice cream flavors to choose from—it’s almost impossible to decide. Definitely check their website ahead of time to see what each location has available. Tonight’s treat was an apple dumpling with scoops of the amazing blueberry cobbler, finished with a cinnamon drizzle. Easily a 10/10—not overly sweet at all and absolutely made my evening. I’ll definitely be ♀️ for more very soon! side note if you have fur babies they have a frozen treat for them as well .

Normally I love this place. Today not so much. I love love love pumpkin pie but I’m allergic to clove. Pumpkin pie anything is hit or miss. Today my husband and I stopped and I had asked if their pumpkin pie ice cream had clove, may have mispronounced it cloves with it being a long day. I got laughter from the girl at the window followed by her asking a coworker, spelling the ingredient, laughing some more, then saying I don’t think so but I really can’t say for sure. I explained it’s a common ingredient in pumpkin pie and got the same I don’t think so but I really can’t say for sure. At which point I decided to roll the dice since I have EpiPens on hand. Clove is one that will randomly send me into anaphylaxis, so it’d be nice to know if I can have these more often or if I need to be smarter by cutting them off. I’ve never been somewhere that couldn’t look up their ingredients for allergy purposes per the ADA. I’m not sure why I had to walk away or gamble in order to deal with this and I’m nothing sure what in this situation qualifies as funny. Sensitivity training for situations like these may be warranted.

Went to get ice cream on Saturday night around 6:30. Asked the counter person if I could taste a flavor.
He replied “not now”. There were about six people waiting for their orders and no line at my window. I took my order home and to me it really was not tasty. I ended up throwing order away. I sure wish I could sample the flavor first!! What is your locations sample policy??

Only complaint is this location is the only one near that closes so early. Come on guys let’s keep it to 10pm the earliest closing.

Edit: based on the response. Sorry Terry but that doesn’t make sense.
All other locations are open later and trust when I say that Santee will still show up past 10. Especially on a Saturday. But hey you do what’s best for business.

MY LORD this ice cream is delicious. A lot of ice cream shops are out there but the flavors and quality at Handel’s really sets it apart from the rest. Beware that the line may be long but it moves relatively quickly and man the ice cream is just worth the wait.

This was the first time I had their ice cream and I absolutely loved it! I got the cone with chocolate and peanuts, and I wasn’t a big fan. Next time I go, I will get the plain waffle cone. I loved their ice cream though, and they are very generous with their servings. Definitely worth the trip! Just a heads-up, their parking lot is small, but on a Sunday afternoon we were still able to snag a spot.

I’ve been to this location 3 times and I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re stingy with the mix ins here. I’ve been to other locations where the ice cream is loaded with all the special mix ins. This location falls short. I just bought a quart of knot your average dough and it was mostly ice cream and not enough cookie dough/salted pretzel ripple. 2 weeks ago, I tried their new pumpkin flavors in a 4 scoop sampler. I literally got one piece of cheesecake in the pumpkin cheesecake scoop and no ripple in the pumpkin pie. I also ordered the coffee heath and there was NO pieces of heath bar in the whole scoop!! Disappointed

Handels homemade ice cream of santee is always a good experience with good ice cream with good service the staff is quick and they do not skimp on the ice cream I usually get two scoops and it is more than enough its 7.50 dollars for two scoops not to bad the parking isnt the best but I’ve never had an issue
