If I could give Tall John’s ten stars, or a Michelin star, I would.
We drove an hour and a half for an 8:30pm reservation and from the moment we walked in, we were treated like royalty. We waited maybe five minutes before two of the kindest, most accommodating employees welcomed us and offered to grab us cocktails while we soaked in the beautiful atmosphere. It set the tone immediately. Warm, relaxed, and genuinely hospitable.
Then came the food. Oysters. Chicken. And the best braised beef short rib we have ever tasted in our lives. Every bite felt intentional and elevated without being pretentious.
Our waitress, Victoria, absolutely made the night unforgettable! Her recommendations were spot on, her warmth was effortless, and her smile made it feel like we were dining with friends. The service was impeccable in a way that feels rare these days — attentive without hovering, thoughtful without being scripted.
We almost skipped dessert… and thank goodness we didn’t. Victoria encourages us to luxuriate and try the cream puffs and I am not exaggerating when I say I would request those for the rest of my life. Unreal!
What truly stood out wasn’t just the incredible food, but the people. From the hostess to the chef to the back of house, every single person went above and beyond to make our first visit memorable. They even kept the restaurant open while we lingered over the last of our meal, and we left feeling so special and so cared for.
We drove home beaming and already planning our next trip back.

Tall John’s invites walk-in customers to join them in either bar or kitchen seating. Our wait was short and we chose stools at the kitchen bar and were very satisfied with the ambience. Watching the chefs make the magic happen was so much fun and the food was fantastic. If you are looking for a creative gin cocktail you must try Tall John’s version of a Crop Top… fabulous. We shared a cheeseburger/fries and the Bavette steak with creamed spinach and topped it off with one of the best deserts I’ve had in a long time… their Bruleed Bread Pudding. The service, ambiance and food were fantastic. We’ve visited prior restaurants at this location and believe Head Chef/Owner Trevor Payne has created the very best layout and ambiance. After our first visit Tall John’s we have added it to our short list of favorite places for a date night dinner. I highly recommend Tall John’s to anyone looking for an amazing experience.

Tall John’s is an absolute must try! It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Asheville. The neighborhood is gorgeous, and the interior is cozy, inviting, and aesthetically beautiful. It feels intimate , like you’re right at home , making it perfect for a special occasion, birthday, or date night.
The service is truly immaculate. The food is delicious, comforting, and consistently amazing. The cocktails and mocktails are incredible, and the desserts are decadent. We’ve tried multiple dishes and every single one has been to die for, but I always come back to the roasted half chicken with potato purée…it’s just that good.
Another perk: small and medium plates are half off during happy hour! We usually start with the Parker House roll and the Caesar. For drinks, I highly recommend the piña nolada for a mocktail, and the espresso martini for a cocktail.
The menu changes slightly with the seasons, but every visit is a hit. Highly recommend!

Just perfection all around. The lamb shank was one of the most unique and fresh tasting meals I’ve had in some time, and the steak was just as on-point. Hard to choose between all the great salads – roasted squash, beets, etc. – but any one of them would’ve been a match for the season.
We sat at the chef’s counter and enjoyed watching the system that this team has completely dialed. And simultaneously, they’re all so calm and friendly while working their magic – it’s evident how passionate they are about their ingredients and cooking.

Tall John’s did not disappoint! The atmosphere is fun and elevated with locals pulling up at the bar or kitchen counter or choosing a table. Funky 20s decor and vibe and the food is insanely good. Beautiful presentation and an explosion of flavors. Everyone should order the winter squash.

Start with a mimosa at the chef’s bar. Trust me, watching the chefs craft every dish right in front of you adds a whole new level of appreciation! It’s literally breakfast theatre. They move with precision, everything is plated with care, and there’s this quiet confidence in the way they work that makes you even more excited for what’s coming.
My friends and I ordered the Croque Madame, Dutch Baby, Sweet Potato Hash and the Classic Breakfast Plate. Everything was cooked to perfection.

We arrived way early for our reservation. The hostess was welcoming and understanding. After acknowledging we were happy to dine at open kitchen bar seats, she sat us promptly. Our server was friendly, attentive, and informative. The kitchen staff and bartenders performed their amazing choreography and delivered on fantastic flavor combinations and offerings. Dumped our leftover salad greens and yumminess (is that a word?!) on this morning’s egg; savoring our delicious dinner at Tall John’s, all over again. Thank you.
