The asian lady taking the orders was rude. Rushed me and instead of asking me if I wanted anything else she insisted on trying to close out my order.
The asian guy serving the meals doesn’t confirm anything. When I asked him for extra sauce he rolled his eyes and threw a very little on my plate
Let me be clear from the start: they served overnight cooked chicken. I personally witnessed them take already-cooked chicken from a pot, reheat it on the grill, and try to pass it off as freshly made. When I called them out on it, they had no explanation—just a blank stare.
At first glance, the setup might remind you of Sarku Japan, a favorite among mall-goers. But don’t be fooled—this is not Sarku Japan. Not even close. The quality of food is nowhere near the same, and that becomes obvious after the first bite.
The food itself was bland and underwhelming. Even worse was the service: when I politely asked the cook for more sauce, he ignored me—not once, but multiple times. And this was with zero other customers in line. It felt like they didn’t care at all about customer experience.
As for the atmosphere, give credit where it’s due—it’s the American Dream mall that provides the ambiance, not this place. The restaurant adds nothing to it.
Do yourself a favor and dine somewhere else. There are much better options in the mall that respect your time, your taste buds, and your money.
Also, the food is incredibly oily. Not going to lie, the food at Sarku or Samurai Sushi nearby is much better. The vegetablrs were the only thing that actually tasted okay. The sauce had almost the same kick as Sarku, but perhaps the only thing that wasn’t good was the noodles. The chicken is alright, but very oily as well.
To be fair, I don’t think I would come to “Ichi Japan” anymore. For what it’s worth, I think it would have been better if they had proper etiquette. I just find the workers to be very miserable; at the very least, unhappy with their jobs. Or, perhaps they don’t have business to support any kind of business morale.
There are way too many good options at American Dream to deal with that type of attitude.
I ordered the Vegan Teriyaki and asked if they have a special/clean section of the grill to cook it on. They said yes and put it on the grill in an empty area with chicken on one side and steak and shrimp on the other. The cook made a point of getting different spatulas.
When i got my food, I was surprised at the texture of the tofu. It must come in a large roll because it has like a skin on it. It’s hard to describe other than nothing about this, which resembles tofu. The texture is off-putting, it’s very dry and does not taste good.
But the WORST part of this is that I tasted shrimp on the 3rd piece I ate. I stopped eating it, ate the vegetables and noodles, and threw the tofu away. I casually walked back up and stole a peek at the grill. Sure enough, there was chicken and shrimp right where my tofu was cooked.
I went back to the cashier and asked to speak to the manager. She went to the back and came out saying the manager was not there, but she asked what happened.
I explained that along with eating vegan food, I have a sensitivity to seafood to begin with. I also told her that if I had a full-blown seafood allergy, it could have been much worse due to cross-contamination. Though I imagine someone with such allergies would avoid it anyway, seeing only one grill.
She immediately understood and apologized. She worked on refunding my meal, and the manager came out. I explained the part about seafood allergies, and he stated that he knew what my issue was. I reiterated that it’s not just my issue. It’s dangerous for people. He shrugged it off.
The cashier was really, really nice and I’m grateful she understood. She was very quick to respond with refunding my meal vs. asking me to show her proof of what I had not eaten — she took me at my word. I will also say that the other cook was very nice and gave us extra sauce without being aggravated that we asked.
I held no high expectations for mall food, but I should have moved past the cashier area to look at the grill first before I ordered. Lesson learned and I’ll be more diligent next time.
