Built by Samuel Converse in 1862, the impressive greek revival structure at 135 Cooper Street in Agawam, Massachusetts became home to the Federal Hill Club in 1936.
The Federal’s current owners Michael Presnal and Ralph Santaniello easily integrate the white linen elegance of that bygone era with a fresh and innovative “new american” cuisine that is perfectly prepared and impeccably served. Strong italian and french influences inspire the contemporary culinary style of chef Presnal in dishes such as his red beet risotto, burnt tangerine glazed cod, and white-chocolate panna cotta.
The Federal is dressed up as a special occasion restaurant, but is sociable and affordable enough for every occasion.
New American cuisine with Italian & French influences served in a stately Greek Revival building.

Few places in the country can rival the food at the Federal, amazing quality service, delicious food, at very steep prices, but well worth it. No mail here should start off without their famous cup of balls and the fabulous pizza. My braised rib was outstanding in may just be the highlight of the entire menu, but that’s somewhat subjective given that there are no bad items served. I’ve never been disappointed on my many visits over the past 15 years.

Simply superb. My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here this evening. We could not have been any happier with the superior food and service that we received. Our waiter Blair was outstanding. He was welcoming, friendly and professional. He always checked in with us in a timely manner, to see if everything was OK, or if we needed anything. Another server, Michael, was terrific as well. We enjoyed talking with both of them.
The food, was splendid. My wife’s braised beef short ribs were delicious and tender. My New York strip steak was also tender and absolutely perfectly cooked. And the 2 desserts we had, were delicious as well.
It has been a very, very long time, since we’ve had such a consistently excellent restaurant experience, when we dined out. We had just about given up hope… but then we found The Federal!
We will most definitely be back and look forward with great anticipation, to our next meal there.
Again, simply superb!

Eating here was such a wonderful dining experience! We made reservations a few days in advance and sent the restaurant a text when we arrived, and they text us back when our table was ready so that we entered safely and without a wait. The decor in the room we were sat in was classy and calm, with soft music playing to set the atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful, and knew so much about the food they were serving! Our table ended up sharing a deconstructed nicoise salad as a shared appetizer, along with the bucket of balls, and we ordered servings of the scallop special and the carbonara, with some sides of mashed potato. Each dish was presented beautifully, and the food was cooked perfectly. The taste was honestly perfect for everything, it was so delicious. I cannot recommend this place enough!

So we finally got over to this very-hyped, old-money restaurant. Overall we had a lovely time. It’s expensive, but you already knew that. Worth the premium, but I personally wouldn’t make it a regular destination. To start we got the zucchini matchsticks and bucket of Balls, (not pictured) but both very good. One of their trade lines is these fried risotto balls with truffle oil over mashed potatoes. They were great. For entree my gf got the short ribs with a lobster tail, which was excellent, she said it was just a little dry and could have used the sauce over it rather than underneath. I got a special they were running that night, 8oz filet over wok fried lobster with ginger and mushrooms over mashed potatoes, also with a lobster tail. It was also excellent, but everytime I do this I remind myself, I’m just more of a ribeye kinda guy. For dessert it was my gf’s birthday so she got a special they ran that night of butter toffee pudding with candied pumpkin seeds, ice creme and cream fraiche, with a simple little candle. A very nice way to cap off the meal. All in all, a wonderful experience, one of the top few restaurants in western mass. Will likely be back.

We had an amazing anniversary dinner there last night. Service was great… to keeping our waters filled and checking in how the food was. We didn’t snap a pic of the risottos balls but they were amazing as always! Pictured is the short ribs with lobster corn chowder and the diver scallops with lobster. AMAZING! thank you!

My child made me a reservation at the Federal restaurant and told me this was the the best restaurant in the area so we went. My first course was the extra salty Caesar salad with a lot of extra granulated salt on top so I couldn’t eat it; I gave it to my husband. Next I ordered the cod fish which also came with a lot of extra granulated salt on top, I have congrats to people who put a ton of salt on my food. They were all very salty but I ate them all and survived to write this comment on their restaurant that you have failed to kill me. I have been polite with the waiter as I understand I shouldn’t come to America because I am ethnic Chinese. By the way, I think I am lucky to not get beaten today. I would be brave to go any where by myself without any company.

First time dinner for us. Our 40th Anniversary, we wanted a new a special place we hadn’t eaten at in the past. From start to finish it was very good. Our server Jen was very attentive as were the water , clearing or food runner staff. The Szechuan tuna was rare and delicious. The “elephant ear” pork chop was so hot when it came out I had to wait to eat it! Now that’s right out of the fryer!!! The polenta was tasty and the green beans were firm not mushy. The risotto balls were amazing! The Caesar salad with a fried egg on top was my favorite. Great job, applause to Jen and the chefs at The Federal! We will be back.

There’s never any meal that stands out when you look over the menu as the description leaves you with questions of uncertainty if one should order. Finally you make a decision and carefully displayed morsels of food arrives esthetically pleasing to the eye. As you delve though the dish you chose your left with another wonderfully prepared dish that you find delicious and satisfying. The unique displays of offerings will bring you back time and time again. Always professionally done and rarely disappointing.
