Modest eatery serving Japanese fare including traditional noodle soups like ramen & udon.

First time visiting after the change in management and the food is even tastier! We got Shoyu and Tantanmen ramen, both were really well balanced and flavorful. The tempura was also really crispy and not soggy. Only thing I miss is the old handwritten signs on the walls.

I’ve tried tonkatsu and tantanmen ramen at other places, but the broth was often too heavy with pork flavor. Here, the balance was perfect—rich, flavorful, but not overwhelming. The dragon roll was outstanding, with tempura that stayed super crispy. The ramen broths were deep with umami, and the jellied egg was spot-on. The noodles tasted fresh and homemade, and I enjoyed every bite down to the last drop of broth.
The food was excellent, the service was attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Definitely one of the best ramen spots I’ve been to—I’ll be coming back for sure!

We recently tried Matsuchan and really liked it! We ordered the tonkatsu ramen, takoyaki, and Philadelphia roll, and everything was delicious.
To be clear, I’m not comparing it to Japan but for Kalamazoo, this is hands-down the best tonkatsu ramen we’ve had so far. The broth is rich and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. My husband and I really liked it I just wish it was served a little hotter, and for the price, I think a little more broth would be appropriate.
Service was also great, everyone was friendly. Overall, it was such a great meal and definitely worth trying if you’re in the area.

This is our first visit after management change, and it was a joyful and pleasant visit, we had the chance to chat with the owner, he was very kind in explaining everything is made from scratch. The soup is thick and rich in flavor, thanks for being simmer for more than 24 hours. The spicy sauces are home made. Musubi sushi is a must. Gyozas are perfectly fried. The place is cozy and friendly. We just love Ramen. We will come back to try sushi and poke bowls. If you love Ramen you need to visit and fall in love with the food.

We got an order of the Tonkotsu ramen and one order of the spring rolls. Both were delicious and were served to us promptly. The ramen broth was extremely rich and warm, and the serving of pork was very generous. We brought our 20-month old daughter, and she was quite literally dancing as she slurped up her ramen broth and noodles, a performance she only reserves for the best of meals; I wouldn’t take this lightly, dear reader.
The service was really what stood out during our visit though. Our server was a young man who was extremely attentive and did a great job at anticipating our needs. There was an older couple working behind the counter, and I noticed that the woman was smiling at my baby, so I called her over and asked if she wanted to come say hi. She immediately came over and was so happy to get some waves and blown kisses from our girl which was the sweetest thing to see. At the end of the meal, I was cleaning up the mess that is always inevitably left at our table after a meal, and she started playfully shooing away from across the room
I love supporting small family businesses, and that familiar local warmth exudes from this place along with the food they serve up. The prices are also very fair, so I highly recommend visiting this small establishment and giving them the business they definitely deserve.

Great place! Miss the old one, but this one has a new life to it. Employees are friendly, and it’s still a super cozy restaurant. Love the new options as well! You can really taste the peanut flavor in the tantanmen broth, and the spicy tonkatsu is a personal favorite. Highly recommend!

Small (6 or 7 small tables) Japanese restaurant that has a great selection of Ramen. The Ramen is very authentic and is a wonderful treat on cold days. The daily specials are excellent as well.
Sad update – June 2025. I understand the owner/chef retired so the restaurant is now permanently closed.
June 23. Mats Chan has remodeled and reopened. Fewer ramen options. But great to see the upgraded interior.

Service was excellent! They offered to substitute ramen pork or chicken broth for vegan, and it was delicious. I would say perfect portion sizes. Boyfriend says the poke bowl is the best he’s ever had! Will come back for sure.
