WOW! JUST WOW! We had such a lovely and memorable meal at Piccolina! The service was warm and charming. Very welcoming ambience. And the food was incredible! The chopped kale salad and minestrone soup were delicious. The Alfredo and pistachio pasta was amazing, as was the bolongese. The chicken marsala was lightly fried and marsala sauce was on point. The beef stew was divine! I dropped the ball on getting pics of the deserts, and the cheesecake was best Ive had! And have to say, we left feeling well fed but not befuddled by our meals. Bravo PIccolina!

Piccolina, meaning “small one” in Italian, was named for the intimate and charming space in which it dwells. As I entered, semi-famished, I was greeted promptly and seated at a street-facing bar bathed in warm light and enlivened by the wondrous aromas taking flight from the nearby galley window.

Mind you, I consume kale only because I feel obliged to do so. But if one must eat this glamour-challenged garden step-child, the salad here, garnished thoughtfully with pistachios and plump sultanas as well as rich Parmigiano Reggiano and a delightful roasted garlic crumb, can pay one’s debt to healthy living in a most agreeable way.

The pillowy moz and crispy-chewy crust of my margherita pizza were on point. But the standout was the sauce. This sauce, oh my. You could frolic among the vines in San Marzano, the blunted cone of Mt. Vesuvius in the distance, a zephyr from the Sea of Naples whispering through your hair, and you could pick a sun-ripened, ruby-red tomato from one of those vines, and take a lusty bite of it, and the taste would be no fresher, no more vibrant, than the flavor of this sauce.

Piccolina — small space, big experience.

WOW – this is the Italian spot Asheville needs. Tucked into a multi-use space on the quiet end of the River Arts district, look for the “Aura” sign and you’ll find this restaurant. Owned by a couple from New York, this restaurant is starting with lunch and a $65/pp weekend tasting menu. A wine pairing or wine by the glass is available.

On Sunday night, our tasting menu started with a well executed kale salad and minestrone soup. As a couple, we got to taste both options and it was nice to go back and forth between the two.

The star of the night was the pasta course – no boxed pasta here. Again, we opted to get one “Alfredo” and one marinara. Wow – handmade pasta, excellent texture and warming flavor.

Next was the chicken Marsala – again, well seasoned, fresh, with an appropriate portion size. The meal ended with a chocolate cake and zeppole fried dough balls with lemon curd.

Service was paced comfortably and we left full. The restaurant is small, with limited available table service. Although garage door lined bar seating will thrive in the warmer weather, in the Winter it was a bit constricting.

We love to see the river arts district continue to thrive and this restaurant has a bright future. We can’t wait to return and try the tiramisu!

Spending a long weekend in Asheville from Washington, D.C., Piccolina was our favorite restaurant we visited. Opened just a few months ago inside an old meat packing factory, Piccolina is serving quality Italian food inside a cozy 22-seat space. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I visited for lunch around 1:30pm on a December Saturday. Here’s our experience.

1) Food: To feed the three of us, we ordered the suppli, kale salad, pizza, prosciutto sandwich, and zeppoles with lemon cream for dessert. Literally every single dish was a home run. The suppli is perfectly cooked and melts in your mouth. My wife and I fought over bites of the kale salad, and the pesto on the sandwich was phenomenal. The sauce on the pizza stands out and the warm bites of the zeppoles will make you want more. Truly, they do masterful work.

2) Drinks: For lunch, they have a full drink menu, but my wife and I ordered the blood orange Italian soda. It was delicious and comes with a full glass of ice.

3) Service: It was excellent from the owners to the staff. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and clearly proud of the space they all are creating.

4) Space: It sits 22 people so it’s cozy, but not overcrowded. The green colors and textures on the wall make it stand out. It’s beautiful!

5) Area: It’s in the River Arts District sharing a space with Trackside Studios, a gallery and space for 60+ local artists. There’s street parking out front.

Though she is small, the “little one” is mighty. And delivers one heck of a sandwich. I highly encourage you to try this place out. It’s for sure worth any wait. You won’t be disappointed at all, I would bet money on it. We visited this time during lunch and everything was delicious and fresh. I highly encourage you to get the latte of the day. We did and it was salted maple. I could take a pitcher full intravenously and die a happy death. The sandwich is made out of pizza dough and served with those really delicious charred spots. It definitely compliments the amazing ingredients within. We got the porchetta and the veggie.comes.with chips. Perfect size to take a half home with you. You can eat both halves if you want, but you better take a tour of the attached art gallery and let it settle.

Dinner is a seated service and about $65 bucks. A preset four course meal and worth every penny. An appetizer, two mains, and dessert.

The pistachio cookies served during lunch are worth the trip alone.

Give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

I had the Margherita pizza and the Sicilian blood orange soda, which made for a fantastic lunch. I also enjoyed the chocolate Italian ice dessert, which was equally delicious. I will definitely be returning.

A MUST TRY! Absolutely lovely experience!

This was one of the first restaurants we dined at in Asheville and it set an extraordinarily high bar. From the food to the service, it was a perfect meal. We visited for lunch and ordered two sandwiches (the Rossi and the Prosciutto) and the Chopped Kale salad (it was so hard to choose). When the food arrived, we ate in silence for ten solid minutes because it was so good. The sandwich bread is akin to pizza crust and absolutely delicious. Light, but with a slight chew, and warm! They pre-portioned our kale salad (so thoughtful because we were sharing), it was the perfect touch of freshness and acidity, with notes of sweetness from the golden raisins and crunch from the toasted breadcrumbs. The two owners are also delightful and so kind, and even sent us a surprise dish (Suppli – a must order) when they found out we were visiting from out of town.

My only regret is not ordering the pistachio cookie as soon as I sat down, but it gave me the perfect reason to return.

No photos to share because everything was devoured quickly!

An Italian friend insisted we meet here for lunch and I am glad they did.Now I am the one making lunch dates here with family and friends to introduce them to the incredible food and charming atmosphere of Piccolina. So happy to have this restaurant in Asheville. It has a small menu of impeccably prepared pleasant food. We haven’t yet tried dinner, but it looks like a great experience. The pizza is the genuine Neapolitan style. My favorite thing so far has been stracciatella with their homemade cheese and drizzle of honey – the flavors carried me to a sublime inner world. Welcome, Piccolina! You are artists.

I ate here with my friend for lunch today — we LOVED it! I got the kale salad and the special pizza of the day. Both were scrumptious! The pizza dough was to die for — perfectly toasty and poofy and fresh. We got the pistachio cookie for dessert — it was so pistachio-y! like green the whole way through and the texture was amazing. The servers were tag-teaming and they were all super friendly and nice. Piccolina is small — it’s a very intimate setting. I bet they will grow because the demand is there! And they deserve it!

Our first time at this tiny and cute restaurant. Reminds us of the tiny places in Italy that HAVE THE BEST food! We were greeted and got a seat at the counter. Kale salad was great, hub and I split. We each ordered a sandwich, mortadella and prosciutto, and did halvsies. Both were large and delightful with many flavors and the bread, yum? Not sure how we finished it all. Good to share! A little pricey for an everyday visit but we will be back to try dinner menu.
