Whether it’s a roast turkey with endless sides, spicy meat stew, a seafood extravaganza, or even no-frills Kentucky Fried Chicken, there’s no holding back when the season for feasting rolls around.
Located on busy Broadway in Elmwood Park, we decided on our Christmas Eve dinner at this family-owned establishment. The reservation was easily made via OpenTable.
Upon arrival as first-timers, my partner and I were greeted by the owner at Taverna Mykonos and got a table for two right away in the corner where the tables are close to each other inside their cozy, very dim-lit, and elegant dining room with Christmas music playing throughout. There’s a full bar with an extensive selection of Greek wines, with approximately 80% sourced from regions across Greece, as well as other excellent choices from California and Spain.
The menu featured both authentic traditional Greek dishes along with many other options. The restaurant bakes all of its bread as well as its desserts.
Traditionally, the meat of choice served during a Greek Christmas meal is lamb and pork. For starters, we decided to share Keftedes (Greek-style seasoned meatballs served with tzatziki dipping sauce). For our main meal, we opted for Baby Roasted Lamb with roasted potatoes and Lamb Shank with tomato orzo. Complimentary bread started our meal, and we washed it down with a sparkling spring water product of Greece. Complimentary cookies were given to each table at the end of the meal.
The food was fresh, using quality ingredients, tasty, and well-presented. We enjoyed the keftedes very much, as they were moist and complemented well with the tzatziki dipping sauce. The portion was reasonable. However, we were disappointed with the Baby Roasted Lamb, as it was mostly bones with only some pieces of edible meat.
Service is professional, friendly, and fast.
The cost is comparable to the area. Exchanged a few words with the owner, George, about the old neighborhood in Astoria. Opa!
Service is excellent and food the Delicious and appealing.
Traditional Greek flare with fine dining compliments, whether you are looking a full meal for small plates!
Drinks are A+, with some nice Greek wine selections. a small bar area but the dining room makes up for it and again can’t recommend this place enough
Reservations are recommended, courteous valet parking was also noted
For appetizers, we started with…
Grilled octopus – it was very tender and the capers added a perfect amount of zest. The best mediterranean style octopus I’ve had, and I would come back just for it!
Greek salad- an average greek salad experience, very refreshing with the meal. I did appreciate the huge chunks of feta.
Fried halloumi cheese with apricots – A very beautiful blend of sweet and savory. I did wish the cheese was a bit more stretchy, it was a bit stiff. The apricots paired perfectly with it cutting through the salt.
Now for the main courses!
Lavraki – If there’s anything the greeks know, it’s how to grill a fish to absolute perfection. The bronzini was flaky and again the use of capers added a bright zing. If you’re craving a whole fish this is the spot!
Moussaka – like a mediterranean eggplant version of lasagna. The ground beef was super flavorful, and the eggplant was cooked perfectly (there’s nothing worse than bitter or underdone eggplant). A very cheesy dish without overwhelming the other flavors.
And for a side we got Horta (steamed seasonal greens), I usually dislike anything with kale, but my fork kept wandering back to this plate. The olive oil and lemon really transformed it! but i’m also convinced a bit of magic was involved;)
Overall, a very authentic mediterranean experience with mouthwatering dishes! Can’t wait to be back and try more!
Food and service were amazing!
Brown bread served with delicious olive oil
Ordered the hummus, saganaki, gyro platter and chicken souvlaki platter with lemon potatoes. Everything was incredible. Definitely a must try!
