Copper Top Restaurant is a decent breakfast spot with a comfortable, casual atmosphere and a convenient location. The restaurant itself is clean, easy to get to, and has a classic diner-style feel that makes it welcoming for families, couples, and solo diners. Service was friendly and fairly quick, and staff checked in to make sure everything was okay, which I appreciated.
The menu has a good variety of breakfast and lunch options, including eggs, pancakes, sandwiches, and traditional comfort food. Portions overall were reasonable, but one issue stood out. The dish I ordered that included meat had very tiny pieces, which was disappointing considering the price. The flavor was fine, but the portion size of the meat felt skimpy and not as hearty as expected. It took away from what could have been a more satisfying meal.
That said, the food was fresh, hot, and nicely presented. Coffee was good and kept refilled, which is always a plus. Copper Top is an okay option if you’re looking for a quick breakfast, but I do think portion consistency, especially with proteins, could be improved. With a few adjustments, this place has the potential to be much better.

I ordered the Mexican skillet, which the skillets says they ALL come with eggs, toast and American fries.
On the Mexican skillet it says it has hashbrowns, chorizo, potatoes and bell peppers.
When the skillet came out, there were no American fries in sight. I asked about them, and the waiter told me they’re on the skillet. I mentioned those were the hashbrowns. Another waiter then came up and asked my boyfriend and I if we knew the difference between American fries and hashbrowns. I told him yes, and that we were missing the American fries. He then started stating the difference between American fries and hashbrowns, as if I were stupid. He then told me they’re not included with just the Mexican skillet because it’s highlighted. I told him no where on the menu does it say that the Mexican skillet does not come with the American fries, and that if they don’t come with the fries, it should simply state it. He then repeated that I should’ve known as it was highlighted. At this point we were slightly annoyed that this man has both hands on our table and is leaning over our food. He’s Talking loudly onto our food. (It’s a two people table with just my boyfriend and I) we told him that at this point we weren’t leaving a tip. We weren’t looking for him to give us the fries anymore, but for him to just let us know they would work on fixing the menu. At this point everyone is looking, and he says, “if you don’t like it you can leave” so we said “fine.” And we got up and left, without being able to really touch our food. Not only did we not get to eat at a restaurant we eat at whenever we want breakfast, but we were also embarrassed by the staff there. We always thought the place was seriously ran down, with the most outdated interior, with worn out seats. But we kept going because the food was good. But now, we’re done going there. We decided to start going to the pancake house. And I highly recommend that if you’re looking for a good place to have weekend breakfasts. They have the same affordable prices, yet they have a waaaay nicer interior, where you can sit and enjoy breakfast with your significant other and actually hear them talk because the tables aren’t so close to each other. And even better, the food was amazing!

This one actually makes me kind of sad because I ate here solo prior and had a decent experience being waited on . I brought my infant daughter today for a late breakfast. When I came in the restaurant was slightly busy, which is not a problem at all. I noticed that I was the minority and asked if it was OK if me and my daughter Ate here. The gentleman at the counter, the hostess assured me that it was fine. Immediately after going into the waiting area to wait the designated a time, a large group of lovely white males came in and were immediately seated and greeted. As another African-American that came in with that same group was told that he would have to wait as well . Outside of optics. It looks like the African-Americans were told to wait while everyone else got immediate seating. I personally just did not feel safe there with my infant child and didn’t want to create any uncomfortable scenarios for the staff for having to serve African-Americans. I think the food is fine. But now I question my dining experience and not just for me, but any other person of color that would like to simply try food at this location.

This local eatery has been in Madison for a long time. I remember taking my 3 and 5 year old’s there in the 1990’s. I was there with my 40 year old daughter recently.
The food is excellent diner fare, served hot and promptly. Promptly seated and service was promptly.
The restaurant is clean and well kept.
It’s a great place for comfort food.

I just recently visited and I was very impressed.

Not only was the place slammed but it looked like the line was never ending.

We were sat within 5 minutes and our server was always quick to get us everything we needed. Plus the food was immaculate and quick to come out. Will be back for another birthday breakfast!!

Meh. It’s diner food. The burger was good. The omelet was large, but bland. The chicken dumpling soup was so salty it was inedible. The fruit was fresh and tasty. The waitress seemed tired and a little impatient. Won’t be back.

2026.13.January – You won’t find a better breakfast than Coppertop. Fresh ingredients, great service. Reading the other reviews made me sad for these hard working restaurant owners. This breakfast will be great eating, not greasy, and quick service. Forget what the other reviews say.

Honestly if I could leave ZERO stars I would, but I cant. The staff is disrespectful, rude and disgusting. Their menu states the skillets would come with American fries, eggs, and toast with all skillets. When the food came there was no American fries. We asked if they came with the meal and we were told the hash browns are the American fries. We showed him the menu and he continued to argue with us asking “do you even know the difference between the two are?” With a disrespectful tone. I pulled my phone out and googled the definition of the two and asked if they are the same. I showed him, No they are not the same and all we asked for was the food it states we will get. Hes standing with his hands on table and bent over, breathing all over the food, then told us he would like it if we left. We had no problem with that, we went to the pancake cafe down the road that had an amazing atmosphere, good service, good food, and lower prices.
Overall Copper Top is disgusting, roof is falling apart, ceiling is falling apart, looks like mold growing on ceiling. The staff was so disrespectful. I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!

The breakfast portions were pretty generous and tasty. Only critique was the crepe was thick..other than that, everything was delicious . Loved the old-school decor.

Not too terribly priced for today’s economy. Food was better quality then a chain restaurant with a variety of options on the menu. The staff was attentive, helpful, and didn’t make us wait very long for anything. Tables and bathrooms were clean as well.
