OoooKay!! Now I have found more than one BBQ shack in VA with excellent Brisket! Stopped by on my way home and picked up supper for me’n tha Miss’s. After 2+ hrs in the car and a quick warm-up, all the meats were fabulous !! The Brisket was melt-n-your-mouth lusciousness, the Ribs were perfectly cooked with a wonderful dry rub, and the pulled Pork was tender & tasty, especially with the accompanying vinegar sauce! All the meat had an excellent bark. The red sauce also played well with the Ribs & Brisket. No wonder they have been around for 10+ years!! Now, the sides; Potato Salad- good, Smoked Beans- great, Collards- good (great with a touch of sweetness or Chow-Chow), and Coleslaw- OK but I like a dryer sauce (the Miss’s loved it, wet and creamy). She also enjoyed the Hushpuppies! Service was stellar and a shout-out to Ben in the kitchen for whipping everything into shape!
If you’re traveling Rt 58 near South Hill and need a break or something to eat, Risin’ Smoke is just a couple of easy minutes down W. Danville St. Stop by and enjoy a great BBQ experience!!

on a long drive from bama, couldn’t have picked a better place to fill up before we called it a night. Catfish was amazing, so was the brisket, and chicken. Macaroni was to die for. Great Atmosphere, Amazing Food, Incredible Staff. We will enjoy our homemade cheesecake later tonight. Only negative was there wasn’t a shirt in my size 🙁

I loved the food here. It has that homey feel. For me, the smoked flavor of the ribs I ordered was delicious, as was the rest of the food. The service was excellent; they make you feel at home. They are very kind, respectful, and warm welcome.

As much as I wanted to give this place 5 stars, I just can’t. One reason is because as my husband and I walked in, we didn’t feel welcomed. They seemed like they were in a rush to take our order. Another reason is because of the portion we got, we got the same order of the brisket which was the small plate but one was smaller than the other. We weighed it out once we got home and it definitely wasn’t worth $30 for only 2 plates! Don’t get me wrong the food tasted good but nothing to recommend to anybody. Maybe they had a bad day but still no reason for that kind of treatment.

This place has the BEST brisket I have ever consumed. I poked it with my plastic fork and it just fell right apart, it was…an experience.
The cheesecakes too were something special, especially the Blackberry White Chocolate (my partner adored his brownie bite cheesecake as well).
Also, I adore the space. It was once a gas station convenience store and the atmosphere is so cool. I live 1.5 hours from here and I will drive back specifically to eat more brisket.

Plain & Simple Bbq joint. Excellent smoked flavors. Had pulled pork and turkey. Some of the best Mac & Cheese I’ve had. Broccoli salad, coleslaw, and potato salad. Everything was delicious.

Hole in the wall with great service and food! Everything is made here! Brisket is good, a little too much grease. Mac&cheese, perfect. Potato salad, good. Bathrooms are clean. Get dessert also homemade! Only have a few tables, but also have old-time lunch counter & couple outdoor tables if weather is nice. It’s in an old gas station and lots of memorabilia inside. I love stopping here when traveling thru the area! Not far off I-85 and way better than fastfood.

Man (wheat alergy friendly) You’ve struck gold if you come to this place. I believe that this is the Best Smoked Chicken east of the Mississippi River. If you’re road trippin and want to get some true deep south cooking. This place is for you. Everything is southern cooking down to the bone. It’s gonna have you crawling back for more like a hamster on the wheel with peanut butter hanging all over the place. My only regret for coming to this place is that I didn’t order more of the catfish. I Catfished myself by not ordering more catfish. Shame on me. This kitchen puts Yankee cooking to shame. As it should. Quit the indecisive search and bring your hungry stomach down to this place. I would’ve taken more pics of the food, but the food hid too fast…..it simply hid….. in my stomach!!!!!!!!!!!! Close your phone now and eat here i tell you!

I get the minced bbq sandwich here and it is so delicious Do yourself a favor and try it out! The desserts are also really awesome and homemade. They are a great staple to the South Hill area!
