We also had to order the famous Tempura Cheesecake, and that was by far the best thing I have ever had. I’d highly recommend and if I’m ever back in Kona, I will be stopping in to Sakura.
The food is always fresh and tasty. Of all the places we’ve eaten here on our home island, they have the best rice. I grew up in Japan and recognize excellent rice–they serve it here.
Give them a try and find out for yourself how good their food is and how attentive their wait staff is.
Delighted to have ‘found’ this gem! Don’t let the low-key storefront location prevent you from enjoying the freshest Japanese cuisine I have found so far. You know you’re in the right place when you see plenty of local folks digging in. Get there early or you’ll be waiting a while. This is not the place to rush through. I had the best chicken tonkatsu and teriyaki chicken. The chicken breasts were pounded thin and covered in a light panko. The boneless white meat teriyaki chicken wasn’t drowned in thick gooey sauce but a light brown sauce with onions. Had we discovered Sakura earlier in our visit, we would have happily dined here every day! Terrific staff too.
My buddy says the lunch special is an amazing deal, you get 2 or 3 rolls for under $20, but I couldn’t resist all the specialty rolls. The miso soup was also amazing, and they have multiple other options if you aren’t in the mood for sushi!
