I recently visited this restaurant again after eight years, hoping that the positive reviews signaled an improvement. Unfortunately, this third visit was disappointing. I regret to inform again that the quality of the food hasn’t changed and the hygiene standards I witnessed were unacceptable. I wish I could give them a zero!
While waiting to be seated, I observed a cook handling pasta noodles with bare hands and then touching non-sanitized items, including receipts, without washing or wearing gloves. This was very concerning to see in a kitchen environment.
Our meal consisted of the snapper with vegetables, a lobster roll, and fish and chips. Unfortunately, none of us could finish our food. The fish and chips tasted of old oil, the lobster roll was bland, and the snapper was thin and lacked flavor. Most distressingly, two members of my party became ill with stomach issues shortly after returning home.
As someone familiar with the high standards of Monterey, CA cuisine, I expected much better. I hope they improve kitchen safety protocols.

This place never disappoints and you will enjoy the food. We got a dozen oyster and they were delicious!! Clam chowder and fish and chips is very good. Highly recommend this place.

Fish n chips ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: the fried cod at city fish is always immaculate. Super crispy and flaky outside with soft inside. Tartar sauce has a nice tang to it. Fries could be a bit crispier.
Cheesy crab bread ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: overall not as cheesy as I’d like and came put slightly cold. Came with a good amount of crab so gets a bonus star for that.
Raw oysters ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: I’m not the biggest fan of raw oysters unless they’re super fresh but these are decent.

Have been to City Fish a few times in a few years. First couple times, slightly disappointing HOWEVER, last night had fish with tomato salad and it was absolutely delicious! Whatever or whomever is responsible for the improvement deserves a raise! Perfectly cooked and well prepared meal for under $20! We got a shrimp cocktail, salmon, key lime pie, fish tacos, salad, linguine with mussels and clams. The shrimp cocktail was good, but everything else was bland. It seems like they have good fish and chips. Based on the reviews, I should have gotten that. I definitely will not be returning to find out.
Update: I had given a 3-star based on the flavor, but after eating the linguini with multiple broken shells, I am just super disappointed. This dinner was an order in for a birthday. Please be careful eating this. At least the seafood quantity was good, and after adding oregano, basil, chili flakes, and some other seasonings, the flavor wasn’t terrible. Please do better City Fish.

The City Fish had some of the best fish and chips I’ve had in a while. The fish was perfectly fried with a nice crispy exterior plus light and fluffy fish. The fries were superb plus they’re also generous with the tartar sauce. Most places just give you a tiny cup and call it a day. I don’t think you’ll find a better fish and chips in this part of the Bay Area. 5/5. A+.

Ate here in the late afternoon on a Wednesday before the 4th of July – not busy and extremely fast and friendly service. Good selection of a FEW local wines and the swordfish was perfect. Outside temperature in the triple digits and the kitchen is open to dining area so, it was very, very warm inside – hence one star lost for environmental comfort.

Best lobster roll in the state of California! The crab cake sandwich was divine, classic flavors with a rustic feel. Calamari was really tender, breading was falling off that was the only bad thing about our experience.
