The items that I’ve had there all blended together perfectly. It’s almost like if your favorite melody became a meal. Mother. is hands down my favorite culinary experience of the year. Everything was delightful!
Having eaten at a handful of Michelin starred restaurants, I can easily say that this one is up there with them. They deserve a Michelin star for the top tier quality of their food.
They serve complimentary chips and salsa, which was a nice touch! The salsa was decent but could’ve used a bit more flavor. Chips were thin and crispy — I liked those a lot.
We ordered the house chorizo and mushroom fritters and the beef cheek barbacoa tacos. The food actually came out before the beer, which was a little odd. Portions were generous, but everything was kind of lacking in flavor. The corn tortillas weren’t warm and the meat didn’t have much salt — I even asked for some, but they only had pepper, which was surprising. The tacos could’ve used more lime too, especially since the taste of meat was neutral.
The fritters were interesting but didn’t really have much chorizo flavor. My favorite part of the meal was actually the slaw — bright and tasty.
The bill came to about $36 for two people (two mains and a beer), which honestly felt like a great price. I’d come back for maybe nachos and a drink because the atmosphere is great, but overall the food didn’t quite hit the mark. A few small tweaks — like heating up the tortillas, a bit more seasoning, and more attentive service — would really elevate it. Still, it’s nice to have a spot like this in Downingtown!
We had a 30 minute table wait (not unnatural for busy Saturday) and got a chance to try drinks at the bar. Loved their cocktails, I feel they were better than the previous establishment, photo for reference.
At the moment for me I think they are a nice spot for a drink & a plate of nosh to share at the bar.
As far as the staff goes, they were all amazing, wonderful people, great service and very attentive!
When it came to the food- we were both disappointed. I honestly feel that Mother. Has not been open long enough to refine their menus to their clientele or get a true feel for what works with each particular dish.
They are a new restaurant & I believe it’s fair to say that most establishments go through this adjustment process and I’m hoping that they can make positive progress that aligns with their values and customer expectations. I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop and looking forward to updating my review in the future.
We ordered the brisket empanadas, bbq mole pineapple guacamole, fried fish tacos, duck carnitas, and fried plantains with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Highlights were definitely the spicy margarita which was awesome, duck carnitas and empanadas were delicious.
Unfortunately, the complimentary chips & salsa were seriously lacking in flavor as other reviewers have also pointed out. They need more salt and the salsa was just.. not good. I don’t mean to be harsh but I could buy better salsa at the grocery store.
We were also very disappointed with the dessert. It did not look very appetizing and the vanilla ice cream was freezer burned. The guacamole and fish tacos were just okay. Seemed to be missing a sauce in the tacos and overall lacking in flavor.
I think this place could be great if they listen to feedback and make some basic improvements.
The kitchen is pretty quick with food orders so I was a bit surprised how quickly things come out. Have been here a few times now and it is very consistent with food and service.
