This is one of our go to Asian food restaurants. It serves both Chinese and Japanese food, both options are delicious. Their sushi is very fresh and I order it often. The restaurant is classy but family friendly. The servers are friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the mood for great Asian food. They are just as good for dine in as it is for take out!

Hunan Kitchen in Darien is hands-down one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Fairfield County. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a welcoming smile and the comforting aroma of authentic Chinese cuisine. The staff is genuinely friendly, attentive, and clearly take pride in what they do.
Every dish we tried was exceptional. The flavors are bold, fresh, and perfectly balanced — you can taste the care and quality in every bite. The crispy orange beef was perfection: light, crunchy, and full of flavor without being greasy. The spicy string beans had that addictive wok-charred taste, and the dumplings were so fresh they could have come straight from a street market in Shanghai.

Most extensive Asian Fusion menu available in the extended area. For Darien and restaurants that touch the town line, this one’s hard to beat. I counted 24 seated people walk in before my party arrived and was ready to go somewhere else… but knew the food was good and called everyone to the restaurant. So I said “let’s roll with it…” – the large group sat so far away in a whole separate area and what I really love about this place is that I still had room to spread out and stretch my legs after a hard workout. No food wait, no wait staff issues the place handled everything like the restaurant boss they are. It is hard to get every thing perfect but this chill, unassuming establishment never disappoints.

I’m from Stamford and this is our go to spot for good Chinese food! My family’s favorites are the sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, vegetable fried rice, and the crab rangoon. Everything always tastes very fresh. The staff is incredible too!

Dinner with a party of 5, over all things were good, but the service was almost laughably bad. My mother ordered an iced tea, and when it arrived, requested some sugar. Our server brought her a stack of Splenda and Sweet & Low. After managing to get through the substantial language barrier to request some real sugar, he brought out a little dish. After putting some in her tea, we discovered he brought her a bowl of salt! Not kidding. I brought the salt and the now ruined tea to the bar, and what appeared to be a manager gently dressed down our server over it. “you can’t just GUESS!!! You have to be sure what you bring to customer!!!” It was with a smile, she was not acting angry (neither was I), just disappointed. This was a 50 year old man who delivered the salt. An odd thing, they have no sugar packets, only the fake stuff. What do they serve if people order coffee after dinner? Do they think everybody wants aspartame and saccharine? Other than helping deliver our food to the table, we never saw our server again. No water/drink refills, no “how are your meals”, he literally never approached our table again. One would think he might pay us a little extra attention since he made our mom gag. A whole table with empty glasses is just sad service, and not prompting drink orders is practically stealing from the house. I had even mentioned I would be ordering a cocktail with dinner. The food was all fresh and hot, but not the big flavors I was expecting. I usually don’t order americanized dishes at places with traditional menus, but I had a craving for General Tso’s. They should have called it General disappointment, I don’t think anyone praising it in the reviews has any idea what the dish is even supposed to be. Gen. Tso’s is made with boneless thighs, not chunks of white meat, but reviewers here seem to think that’s a positive. It’s not. Chicken was seriously over done, coating crunchy and dry, and had the thinnest puddle of a weakly sweet brown sauce, with zero heat or any other flavor, not even ginger or garlic the staples of the dish. Mild as a glass of milk is also not what the recipe calls for. Other dishes around the table were much better, the Thai chicken was really good, and our niece had a honey chicken and shrimp that was outstanding. Mushu was also a bit flat flavor-wise, yet had an oddly overwhelming umami punch. The housemade pork bao buns were excellent, but when we praised them to the manager she went on about how they are so good because the pork is shredded, not ground. I didn’t break it to her, but the buns we received were clearly ground pork, little meatballs dense as a dim sum filling, and definitely not shredded pork. We will return, most of the table enjoyed dinner, and sit down Chinese places are scarce, but I do hope they will train staff better, and show chef where the spice rack is. Oh, and lastly, get the fox news off your bar TVs. Nobody wants to see trashy politics during dinner. This is restaurant 101 stuff.

While this is an Asian fusion restaurant that covers staples from several countries I have to say I had some excellent sushi there last night. I ordered the yellowtail jalapeno appetizer and had toro and raw scallop sashimi which they torched and smoked. It was all excellent. They also offered an omakase menu which I will be sure to try next time. Very impressed and wasn’t expecting it to be this good. Fish was incredibly fresh and well prepared and seasoned. Will be going back – a lot!

I called for take out from here the other day and it was so good! I have been struggling to find good Chinese food in the Darien/Rowayton area for the past year and I’m so glad Hunan Kitchen has opened. The hostess was so friendly and the food was delicious and fresh. I got the chicken and broccoli and pan fried dumplings. Definitely will be going back to try more!
