Café François review – the French brasserie that’s not French enough
Reviews
We went for Sunday lunch, when they don’t serve their signature rotisserie chicken. We ordered Le Grand Roast. Starting with the positives: the gravy was tasty, and we really enjoyed the sausage stuffing (though the portion was quite small). The highlight of the meal was definitely the Comté gougères — rich, flavorful, and generously served (five pieces).
The meats were pleasant, but portions were disappointingly small — I could hardly believe how thin the porchetta slice was. The roast potatoes were overdone, with a thick, hard crust, and the fries were fairly basic.
As for the “unlimited” chocolate mousse, it turned out to be more of a social media trap. While they do offer refills, the mousse itself was overly sweet, and I’m not sure how much real chocolate or cacao percentage went into it. After a few spoonfuls, it was more than enough. Personally, I prefer quality over quantity, and I wouldn’t order it again.
Overall, I wouldn’t go back or recommend the restaurant. It was a busy Sunday, which is understandable, but the service felt strained — though the staff remained polite and did their best
While the food was excellent, the service didn’t quite match it. We were greeted politely at the front, but the waiter who mainly served us was quite monotonous. He checked in with nearby tables about their food, but only came to our table to clear plates, which felt impersonal. For context, we were two Asian women, and the difference in attentiveness was noticeable.
Overall, great food, I would come back but the service could be more consistent.
– We arrived before they opened and kindly let us sit inside whilst they finished setting up.
– They also kindly took our suitcase so we didn’t have to cram it under the table (and were very kind and understanding when we later forgot it!)
– AND there’s extra railings at your table for bags/coats. Lovely touch.
– The second bottle of wine we wanted to order was out of stock so they gave us a more expensive bottle at a comped price.
– Friendly, attentive and efficient service.
– I LOVE to see an open kitchen.
– They gave my dad a little happy birthday message on his dessert.
And the food, oh my god, it was delicious. Thanks all! We’ll be back.
After ordering, our food came to the table within 5 minutes which we didn’t like. We would have liked more time to enjoy our drinks and settle in. Overall it felt very rushed.
The food was good – there was nothing spectacular about it but it is a good roast. Overall an okay experience.
However, the pricing here feels excessive. £15 for a quarter of chicken is steep, and when we ordered the whole chicken (which arrives pre-cut), it was clear that not all parts were included, notably the wings, under-breast, and carcass meat. Given the price, I would expect to receive the full bird. This made the experience feel somewhat misleading.
The quality of the food itself was very good, the chips and potato dauphinoise were excellent. That said, I would prefer the jus served separately, as its strong flavour overpowered the chicken.
Lastly, I was surprised to see a £1 charity charge added to the bill alongside a 15% service charge. While I support charitable giving, I think this should be made clear upfront. At these prices, it would also feel more appropriate for the restaurant to donate or match this themselves.
Overall, the high pricing and lack of transparency let the experience down, despite excellent service.
if the waiter happens to see this, you are genuinely too good for this place. You deserve to be working in a Michelin-starred restaurant or training others in a higher ranked establishment.
The price was just as appetising! Service was great, the lady at reception was so kind and helpful!
The rotisserie chicken, frites, pan jus and merguez sausage is a great combination.
The chocolate mousse is lighter than i’m used to but a delight with all the chocolate shavings and honeycomb it can be served w. at request. The house white wine is lovely.
The staff were helpful and attentive. But sitting area was very compact close to each other the table was very small plates by plates.
The bread for sandwiches were slightly stale. The cakes and brioche were overly too sweet and heavy. Not a venue for afternoon tea.
