A delightful surprise for Sicuan cuisine lovers! We ordered the food from the Chinese menu and it is very authentic. Really like all the dishes we ordered. Spicy in a delicious way. Rice and cold drinks are recommended . Definitely Eat way more food than we normally would have. Will definitely go back again.

Visited North Star (北极星川菜馆) on a really cold day and the meal really hit the spot!!! We ordered two dishes that came out in metal pots over small burners, which kept everything hot throughout the meal and made it feel especially comforting.
The dry pot–style meat dish was well seasoned with a nice balance of heat and that classic Sichuan numbing spice. The meat was tender, and the peppers, scallions, and cilantro added good texture and freshness without overpowering the dish.
We also had the stir-fried cabbage, which was simple but done well – lightly crisp, garlicky, and not greasy. It paired nicely with the richer flavors of the other dish and was honestly one of those dishes you keep going back to.
Nothing felt rushed, the food stayed hot, and the flavors felt true to Sichuan cooking rather than toned down. A good place to come when you want something warming and satisfying, especially in this Chicago weather!! 🙂

Coming on Christmas day was an unexpected surprise. After the previous owner closed Green Garden and the expected renovations taking much longer, we thought it was never going to open. The Spicy Boiled Beef was just as good. We also had the squid and chicken fried rice, both were very flavorful. It was busy and the staff was a bit overwhelmed, but they handled it well. Good bye Green Garden, hello North Star! We will be back!

We ordered two cup of tea , a Honey Walnut Shrimp and a Pan Fried Noodle with Combo.
These were so Volumy and delicious.
The staffs were very kind , polite and helpful.

North Star Chinese Restaurant was a great experience. The service was excellent—attentive, friendly, and welcoming throughout the entire visit. The décor and ambiance were also very well done, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere that made the meal even more enjoyable.
One thing I really appreciated is that they offer two menus: a traditional Chinese menu and an American-style Chinese menu. This gives diners the opportunity to choose based on their preference or even explore something new.
I decided to try several dishes from the traditional Chinese menu, and they were absolutely delicious. The flavors were authentic, well-balanced, and clearly prepared with care. It was a great reminder of how flavorful and diverse Chinese cuisine can be when you step beyond the typical takeout options.
Another plus is that the prices are very moderate, especially considering the quality of the food, service, and atmosphere.
Overall, I highly recommend North Star Chinese Restaurant. Great service, great ambiance, delicious food, and reasonable prices. I will definitely be coming back.

It’s sad to see Green Garden leave from its service. The renovations had taken much longer than expected, and we had to choose between a place in Vernon Hills and a place north of Elk Grove Village, for some semblance of Chinese and not your sugary slop sauce-based protein Chinese. Between “It’s so over” and “We’re so back”, North Star is tipping the scales on “We are so back!”
The quality of dishes have returned and portions are great for their price. There were some dishes that we ordered from Green Garden that were not in the menu but they had reported to have not finished making the menu.
The eggplant in garlic sauce has a crispy bread texture. Their Pork Intestines in a dry pot dish is fire, if you can handle it’s inherently gamey taste. The pickled fish soup had a bit of a sour note, but was not overwhelming at all. Our appetizer, which was the beef and tripe in a spicy sauce, was actually pretty spicy! Beware I guess.
The rice comes complimentary to the entrees. Tea this time around is extra, but isn’t overly expensive. They haven’t appeared to have gotten their serving mediums straightened out, but I’m sure that’ll be a quick fix.
I can’t wait to return. This restaurant is a strong competitor to a lot of the Chinese restaurants over in Chinatown, and has been a family staple in the past that will continue the tradition.

I hadn’t been back to this location since the Green Garden days, but my wife and I decided to give Northstar a try for a sit-down dinner. We are so glad we did! It’s a step above your typical Chinese spot, offering both authentic and American-style menus with much more flavor. We kept it simple with the shrimp egg foo young and crunchy garlic shrimp, both of which were excellent. If you’re in the Lake Zurich area, it’s definitely worth a visit.
