We ordered at the counter, and they brought our food to us about 10-15 minutes later. Apparently, this was fast turnaround for this place based on what the order-taker told the customer in front of us (as it wasn’t too crowded when we got there).
The catch of the day was Tombo, which we ordered in our fish tacos with a side of tortilla chips and black beans and the Banh Mi with purple potato salad as the side. Both meals were excellent. Flavorful and just the right amount of spice.
The only thing we would have wished for is homemade corn tortillas. That would have pushed them to the MOST EXCELLENT category.
The fresh catch bowls were amazing — more like full plates than a standard “bowl,” with really high-quality, fresh fish. The fries were awesome, and we loved that they mentioned cooking everything without seed oils and using tallow for the fries, which we really appreciated.
You absolutely have to get the animal fries — a must order.
The second time we went (Friday night), they had live music, which made the experience even better. The open-air seating has a true Hawaiian vibe and creates a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere.
Great food, great energy, and a spot we’d happily go back to again.
I had the fish tacos and OMG they were the best fish tacos I’ve ever had! Flavorful, juicy with just a hint of warmth- just perfect! They come with nacho chips and a warm bean dip.
Service here is excellent very casual. You order downstairs, pay then take a number and go choose your seat. On certain days they have live music.
With the number of 5 star reviews over 600 already, it is clear that Gill’s Lanai is definitely putting a spot on the map and claiming people’s tastebuds one fish taco at a time.
Make sure you stop on your way through Hawi. You won’t regret it!
The mahi mahi tacos were delicious and perfectly cooked with fresh home made chips (though the amount of chips I’m sorry was a joke).
We enjoyed it so much we bough the kalua pork tacos to try and omg they were to DIE for. Just an absolutely amazing flavor with their delicious Hawaiian hot sauce on top. Sub for a side of waffle fries for +$2 and you’ve got your self just an awesome meal.
Pro tip 100% pay the +2 for fries. We loved the pork tacos and fries so much I forgot to take a picture of it!
In fact, as far as we are concerned, Gill’s is almost reason enough to visit the Hawaiian Islands generally, and maybe even move to Kapa’au…
This place has it all; chill outdoor vibes, make-you-drool when you think about the food flavors, and people so genuine that you have to travel across the ocean to find them!
Really, the entire staff that we interacted with, including Tyler, Sue and Lani all bleed the spirit of Aloha!
Fish Tacos and the Bahnmi as well the purple Ube Sweet potato salad are all TOP RECOMMENDATIONS!!!
We were told about Gill’s by a local artist who we met at a neighboring town market, he said, ‘if you want the best fish tacos on the island, you have to go to Gill’s up near Hawi.’
We hear recommendations like this all the time; but in this case, he was totally speaking the truth…
If this sounds like a paid promotion, it’s not…my only suggestion that I have is that they expand to additional locations in neighboring Kawaihae or further south so that more people can experience the pure awesomeness of this place!
Thank you for making our lunch a top memory of our Hawaiian trip! Tommy and Robyn Wartman!
