Cactus 3 has become one of my reliable spots in Iowa City because it works well at any time of day. During the daytime, it is an easy place to stop for good Mexican food. The menu has familiar favorites like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and appetizers, and everything comes out quickly. It is a comfortable place for lunch or a relaxed dinner, and the atmosphere stays friendly and low pressure.
What I enjoy even more is the way Cactus 3 shifts in the evening. At night, the energy changes and the bar becomes the main focus. First things first, this place is definitely overpriced as far as food goes. It gives more of a bar vibe than anything. Service was subpar and its because the servers are not being trained correctly. Finally, the vibe was nice, its seem like a nice place to hit for a pregame.

Ordered takeout, got 3 beef tacos and the queso fundido w/ chips. Now, tell me why it costs and extra $1 for each taco to add in onions? Which is really just a default filling with tacos at this point? Makes no sense. The beef was seasoned okay but was really just a greasy mess when I picked it up.
Queso fundido was alright. Not enough chorizo to compliment the amount of cheese.
The worst part about this is that coming as a visitor, why is there a Cactus 1, 2, and 3? And why does every single one use a different point of sales system??? Does it not make sense to centralize everything, call the restaurant simply “Cactus”, and then choose a location based on where you’re at?? I don’t really have the time or wherewithal to know which location is Cactus 3… and when I walk into Cactus 1 thinking it’s the location I ordered to and realize I have to walk another 4 blocks over to get my food, it’s not a great experience.

I went out with a couple of friends Friday night. The chips and the margaritas were very good, however, the service was not. The man who took our order, who I believe is named Sergio, was flirty and very insistent on getting our numbers. He would not take no for an answer. This made my friends and I super uncomfortable. I’ve heard of similar instances from my other friends who have gone to this restaurant, and I don’t think it is okay. There needs to be something done about this.

Cactus three is a roll of the dice. Every experience is different. I’ve never been dissatisfied. What will cactus 3 bring you? Who knows. All I can say is that I love it. All of it.
Also their bathrooms are clean and I have a really nice waitress now
