We started as a family business that first opened our door in 2003. Calling ourselves as just Yama at the time, we only had four tables, truly being just a hole in the wall. Through an arduous process of many trials and errors, Andy Chen was able to perfect the now YamaChen menu to that we know today. Each day, for our customers, Andy Chen brainstormed ways to improve the quality of our food, from our in house sauce to our fish providers, creating the signature YamaChen rolls that solidify our place in the restaurant sphere. He believes that his success is due to his motto: Freshness, Sincerity, and Generosity.

You MUST TRY the Sashimi appraiser!!! It comes with Chefs selection of fish and let me tell you the White Tuna was the best surprise!!! So tender, subtle sweet ocean flavor; THIS BROUGHT ME BACK TO JAPAN!!! The miso soup was delicious, seaweed salad was fresh and tasty, perfectly prepared. This place is a hidden gem! After driving around the city on a Saturday evening looking for a place too eat that did have an hour plus wait we stumbled across this lovely restaurant. The staff was very friendly and helpful in finding a good selection. Their food is nothing short of amazing. I’ve have sushi all over world and this is far one of the best experiences I’ve had. Was really shocked. Food looked good. Until I opened it up and it felt warmer than room temperature. Wasbi was hard and looked old. Ive had a few friends recommended this place but I’m thinking they owe 20 bucks.

They will say they have Kani/crabmeat salad but it’s just lump crab meat & spicy mayo. The raw fish tastes weird, and wan not worth the price at all. There are better places for sushi that are honest about their menu. The fish cuts on my Rainbow Roll were almost transparent they were so thin, and my Volcano Roll was hard as a rock.

Yama is one if our VA beach staples. The Hawaii roll is amazing. However, it is sadly not quite as good of quality as it was 3 years ago. The sushi was a bit mushy and the miso soup was watered down and lukewarm. We will be back, but only out of nostalgia.

My girlfriend and I went out on our Valentine’s date and 3 year anniversary date here and it was our first time at a sushi restaurant. This was our best date we’ve ever had. We got some type of spicy chicken appetizer with the most amazing flavors and it was so delicious I shed a tear. The time it takes to receive the food made out date better because we talked so much and I got to just stare in her beautiful eyes. When my volcano roll sushi arrived I picked up my chopsticks and devoured the first one and I almost walked out of the restaurant because it was so damn good. Never has my mouth be graced with such awesomeness. Our waitress was extremely nice and professional which added to the sheer beautiful ambiance in that place. After our meal our server gave us a complimentary cheesecake my girlfriend and I shared. I can’t give enough thanks to this place and the waitress for making this experience a unforgettable one. Thank you guys so much. They even gave us a $10 coupon for our next visit. Everyone who is thinking about going here please do. This place is nothing short of amazing!!
